Marvel's new owners Disney have issued an edict that from now on, all material featuring Marvel characters must originate in the US-which is potentially very bad news for Panini (who currently publish UK originated titles for younger readers as well as US reprints) and for the UK comics industry in general as it will mean less work for British freelancers and, of course, less comics in the high street for British kids. It also brings to a close a tradition of UK originated Marvel comics dating back to 1976 and the creation of Captain Britain.

There are many creations to pick from but Cap Britain was created by Marvel US for the UK market, the character didn't actually come from the UK stable... And Marvel UK dates back to 1972...

Which is actually good evidence for why this is such a bad idea. Claremont had some experience of the UK but most of the writers for Captain Britain Weekly had none and it showed. I remember picking up Captain Britain Weekly #1 back in 76 and deciding not to bother with #2. It wasn't till it was written by local talent that the comic had much success.

And technically Captain Britain Weekly was published by Marvel UK.

CB was originally published by Marvel UK, yes, but CB was created by the US Bullpen. Just saying.

And a holiday in Cornwall doesn't make either of the creators an expert in how to do stuff for the UK market, lol

Agreed that CB as a character is done far better with UK talent, though

Marvel UK does, yes-but it didn't begin to produce UK originated material until 1979 (unless you count Apeslayer). Captain Britain was published by Marvel UK (albeit initially created by US Marvel personnel) and effectively reinvented as a totally British character around that time. That's why I used the wording I did.
