Technicolor used to be Thomson for people who did not know.

so here are the ones left, Humax, Huawei, Pace, Manhattan, Vestel and Cisco.

Humax yes, they makes good boxes,

Huawei is that Chinese company that Talk Talk is using to spy on their customers, they also make routers that are to be honest awful

Pace? they used to be ok,

Never heard of Manhattan, apart from being a borough in New York city in the U.S,being a drink and used to be a night club here.

Vestal makes cheap boxes, which are okish, but i would not really trust them to make anything more.

cisco, never knew they made set top boxes, not that they are set top any more.

Strange that Technicolor pulled out, maybe they don't think You View will have many takers, I have my doubts as well

At first, it appears a little strange that Technicolor pulled out after their significant contribution to the project.

They no longer sell directly to consumers as they used to in Thomson days. This strategic change may have occured sometime into joining the YouView project.

Instead, they tend to sell via pay-tv operators. Perhaps negotiations with potential pay-tv operators came to nothing or were unprofiitable so they decided not to invest further.

I guess the likely pay-tv operators would just be two companies: BT and TalkTalk. BT would be quite likely to continue with Pace. If Technicolor's negotiations with TalkTalk were not successful I can see this as being a trigger to leave the project.

YouView is an almost horizontal platform (like freeview / free sat) which is rather unusual in a pay TV world .

Basically any youview content provider will be able to offer pay services though the box - so there is no link between the pay Tv and the consumers hardware other than the You View specs and systems .. unlike say Sky where they provide the boxes in the first place.
for a STB manufacturer working fora horizontal pay tv operation is quite nice - one order for a few hundred thousands boxes delivered to one warehouse... whilst say a freeview box - a few thousands for each shop chain to multiple warehouses.

the presence of a horizontal platform in Pay Tv is not new but YouView will be a substantial change in the way in which content owners can get a relationship with the viewers.

I am not surprised the Techinicolor are leaving You View, Lord Sugar is not a big fan of them - He said so at a meeting with one of the major ISP's.
It will be interesting to see which box the ISP's use as Technicolor were cheap

CISCO makes alot of Set Top Boxes these days as they bought/verged a major cable STB provider "Scientific Atlanta" which is distributed around the United States and even Virgin Media.
