Help connecting DVD to PC monitor please

I have an old Acer TFT computer monitor which only has a VGA 15-pin socket and I'd like to use it with a DVD recorder which only has SCART or composite output.

Can I just buy a simple cable to connect these or do I need a converter?

I'm not bothered about picture quality as I will probably be playing the DVD's on a TV or my laptop. The monitor would be mainly used for setting up the recordings.

I was considering this:

Would that probably work?

In a single word No.

PC monitors normally will not synch to 50Hz video. This means an active frequency converter will be needed which is going to cost more than a TV.

You will do better with a PC connected to the monitor with a graphics card with a composite input.

However once you introduce a PC you might as well just play the dvd on the PC.

Actually I might have something that would do the trick.

I'll need to check, but if this box does work then it'll cost a lot less than your monitor. Probably looking at £25 + postage. Is it worth me spending the time to investigate or are you not that bothered?

Actually I am thinking about getting a Video Capture kit. I think that'll let me connect my DVD recorder to my laptop so I can set it up (hopefully). Yes I know I could just record stuff on my laptop but I wanted to be able to set up the DVD and leave it on timer and take my laptop elsewhere. I can get a Video Capture kit for c. £28 + deliv. but I'll look out for a B-grade or second-hand maybe.

Shame, I would have liked to use my spare monitor.

VC kit likely to work? Any recommendations?
