Upgrading Android on Samsung Galaxy S
I started this conversation in another thread and didn't want to hijack it so thought I'd start a thread of my own (although yes, i know there's a search option...)
Anyway I'm trying to update my phone (Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000) to Android 2.2, which apparently is possible on my phone. I've downloaded Samsung Kies onto my PC, connected my phone via USB (which it recognises, so far so good), it downloads the file for the firmware update, and then I get the error message 'Failed to convert to upgrade mode.' I've just nioticed however that my phone has a yellow traingle icon on it and it says 'downloading' so maybe something is happening? Somone help! |

I'm not sure my problem is with Kies, that's installed fine on my PC. I think the problems with my phone. Still can't get it to work, and I really don't want to put it back to Factory settings (as I've seen suggested elsewhere)

there are other ways to upgrade the firmware without using Kies (which is the worst software tool ever) thats why I recommended heading over to XDA, this thread in particular.
If you do use this I recommend getting JPO firmware first then JPY this will leave your phone ready for Gingerbread when it is officially launched. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913 |

OK, that looks really helpful...were it not in what seems to be complete jargon. I'll try and work it out unless anyone can help me through it.

Here is a pretty easy to read step by step for using Odin to upgrade
http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/show...yo-from-Eclair Ignore the Eclair to Froyo part as it was written for when 2.2 was launched. |

Thanks for that, it looks helpful if not a little wordy but I won't dismiss it straight away!
What I didn't realise is that the '3-button method' takes place with the phone turned off at first so if that puts it in this 'recovery mode' I may be able to use Kies as I wanted to before. It shouldn't be this complicated should it?!

Well here's a turn uip for the books! thought I'd give it one last go and I got as far as i did before. The little Android dude with his shovel turned up on my mobile screen but this time a progress bar also appeared! Then the phone restarted itself and stayed on the title screen for a worryingly long time...but then it started up and FINALLY I have Froyo!
Thanks for your time and input though...the moral of the story is...just keep trying!
