Is it possible? I certainly hope so!

Could be, hopefully. Although Mark Sheppard I can imagine will be very busy.Although he has said numoures times how fun it was working on it and how thrilled he was to have the oppurtunity to go on it.

No one will replace Jack but Canton gets the nearest for me. Ideally Jack and Canton for me!

I am a Canton fan on the strength of his 2 appearances. I'd love him to be an occasional companion.

Surely the Doctor must get to know him better as he's the one the Doctor trusts to bring gasoline to his funeral?

That's a good point. Hope so. He is a good character. Good introduction with the Doctor seeing his intellect then inviting him aboard "....and shut the door behind you."

I didn't know he was well known. Clearly a class act. Probably can't afford him too often then. Though they have found the money for the River actor. I didn't know she was famous. But again, class act and it showed straight away in the library story.

Nice that others think the same as me - Canton's an immediate "fit" for the tardis crew. I really like the tardis having more than just the Doctor + 1 in it (apart from all the years when it was only the Doctor +1, which were also excellent.)

I could also suggest that he gave certain information to Canton because he was trustworthy but not intimately connected to the Doctor - making him less likely to be a target or be spied on.

Just suggesting an alternative - FWIW, I think Canton is potentially a significant character and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him reappear later in the series (and beyond).

Either way, I loved Mark's performance. In fact, he's the only person - apart from one personal friend - that I follow on Twitter. For anyone who doesn't already know, he's just directed a new film based on Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island" with his dad as Captain Nemo - http://www.julesvernesmysteriousisland.com/ I can't wait to see it - right up my street.

I wouldn't mind Canton becoming a companion.

As a matter of fact it would make sense, especially if they don't deal with the Death until the end of 11's run. He invites all of his companions to his regeneration. Lets assume it's altered and becomes a more heart filled farewell scene in the end.

God I'm slow, I didn't even realise that older Canton was played by his real father

The trailer looks good but I can't see the film getting a cinema release over here. However it might crop up on Syfy sooner or later

Spoiler
Canto - the word comes from Italian, meaning "song".

Delaware is a river.

River Song can regenerate as seen in TIA. Canton Delaware is River Song.

Sorry, I should have said at the end of episode 2.

And here's a link about Canto and another about the River.

I think that's what he'll be looking for - he's had other stuff on Syfy and a lot of his acting work has been on "that sort" of project - he's almost recoginsed as a channel regular.

I love his dad as an actor so I was dead chuffed when I saw he was going to be in DW - I didn't even realise that they were both in it until a few days before TIA was broadcast.

How many people can say that they've appeared in Star Trek and Doctor Who - and so has their dad? Sheppard Snr even made it into the JJ Abrahams film - part of a very elite group to have been in both old and new Trek.

There's no doubt about it, Canton Delaware is one of those characters that will be fleshed out - even if only in print. Right from the get-go, there's a back-story to his unstated relationship with the Doctor but there's also a whole chapter before meeting the Doctor.

The fact that so much about him as a person was presented in so few lines is amazing - both in the writing and in Mark Sheppard's wonderful perfromance. It's rare to see a new character that feels that complete and real.

You're right, Mark Sheppard is almost as much a Syfy "regular" as Tony Todd is one for the Horror Channel.

What part did Older Canton play in the film? I didn't "know" him then, so he passed me by.

I totally agree about how well rounded the character of Canton was. He was very well written, and very well acted.

The older Canton, (Mark's real life father) brought the gas can when the Doctor was killed. What was it he said when he left? He would see them again, but they wouldn't see him, or the other way around?

Sorry, I was referring to the new(ish) Star Trek film, which Minky said Sheppard Dad was in.

He said he wouldn't see them again, but they would see him. Which they soon did, his younger version.

Some of them have only done Big Finish CDs rather than the TV series
