Anyone remember them?. Basically, the sort of pastry you get on an eccles cake, but a big slab of it, soaked in lard thats been considerably sweetened. Probably the most un-pc food ever, but I loved it. Is it still sold?.

This is totally weird - but today, for the very first time ever, I saw one! And now, there is a thread on it.

I was behind a lady in Waitrose, would you believe it, who had bought one. I asked her what it was and she said she had never had one before but was just trying it out.

So there you are - Waitrose (at least in the the SE of England) is where you go for lardy cake!

It's spiced bread, not at all like flaky pastry Eccle's Cakes Think Chelsea Buns meet Yum Yums. M&S used to do a lovely spiced bun dipped in butter that came very close, but unfortunately stopped making those.

Lardy Cake was one of the first recipes we made in school cookery class, so pretty easy to make. I may have a go soon, it is lovely stuff.

Slightly confused why they are politically incorrect but they are definitely lovely and fattening

Oh my ! They sound lovely. Not being from the UK, I don't think I've ever seen them.

Yep Waitrose in Surrey do them.

The only other times I have seen them is in bakers in the Cotswolds or Oxford.

I had one from Waitrose about a year ago and to be honest it was really dissapointing and not how they used to be!

When I lived down in Hampshire I used to like a saturday trip to a baker in Winchester. They did wonderful lardy cakes.

I think it's a southern thing. Can't find them up here.

Yes, thats what I meant by un-pc, a bit of poetic licence.

Great slabs of it in the bakers window this morning when I was in town. They sell big ones about 10" square or smaller pieces

Best advice if you buy one is to warm it gently in the oven, it doesn't need to be hot, just warm enought to make the grease run, it really isn't nice eaten cold.
