Just heard Princess In Rags on R2,inspired me to start a thread. Gene and the Big O were the two singers best at conveying suffering IMO.They both died relatively young too.Think my favourite GP songs are Only Love Can Break Your Heart,Town Without Pity and Nobody Needs Your Love

He's my MILs absolute favourite singer. He's a legend. Still love 24 hours from tulsa. I love songs that tell a story.

not keen on balladeers.... but 60's balladeers were far superior to todays equivelant boy band bunch.

yeah, i have a soft spot for gene pitney... he did indeed have a rare talent for conveying real emotion in his singing (as opposed to the mariah style warbling that passes for emotion today ). 'im gonna be strong' is a perfect example, a lovely ott 60's style production that actually moves you...

i also rate 'somethings got a hold of my heart'..

Something's Gotten hold of My Heart is amazing and I love the later version with Marc Almond especially - the song is so dramatic. Fantastic vocals from both of them - a great song.

And don't forget his ability as a songwriter.

He wrote "Hello Mary Lou" a hit for Rick Nelson, "Rubber Ball" by Bobby Vee and the Crystals "He's A Rebel".
