hi

i am going to canada in a month for a few weeks and taking my orange mobile phone with me (samsung wave) i have push emails set up so they are sent straight to my phone, however i am concerned that will be charged for data usage whilst i am away, has any one got suggestions on how to avoid that, ie if i remove the email addresses on my handset will that stop it, also have orange maps on phone as well, would i be best to cancel that bolt on whilst i am away also to stop accidental data usage?

tried calling orange and have been on hold for ages so thought i would ask if anyone else knows on here

Find the menu option that is called Data Roaming or something similar, and make sure it's turned off.

Here's the manual (See P113):

You want to go to settings > Connectivity > Data Roaming on your phone and make sure that's turned off.

If your phone is unlocked it might be worth buying a PAYG sim card when you arrive in Canada. That way you can use as much data as you want without worrying about a nasty bill when you get home.

PAYG packages are ludicrously expensive here if you want data - you're looking at $60 a month or more on a sort of pseudo contract, with compulsory monthly topups (if you don't top up, you're put on a hideously expensive per-minute plan or even cut off on some networks). I don't know much about the Canadian mobile market, but I'm led to believe it's even pricier. As for me, I'm learning to live without constant access to data on the go!

I'd certainly look at getting a Canadian sim card when your out there for phone calls home. Check the rates and the costs of data roaming and incoming calls as it could be cheaper for you. When at my home in Portugal I used a local card until a landline was eventually fitted and it save me a lot of money. Enjoy your trip, Canada is a beautiful country.

For your entire World travelling have a look here.

Not as cheap as they use to be but still cheaper than roaming charges outside of the EU.

Not very with it when it comes to data neither.
