What do you think about the Eurovision 2011 Winner?
They were third favoured to win. I love the song and I'm happy Jedward did not win. Again "country friendships" when assigning points and I was surprised Blue got the max number of points only from Bulgaria, although we gave our max to Ireland.

I thought it was very polished and that they went to an effort to make something 'classy', but although it was one of the few songs I gave credit my personal favourite was Sweden. Jedward were entertaining for sure, but the song was more than a bit - musically very oddly constructed.

I couldn't remember how the song went the moment it was over.

Kind of baffled by it's success, but there you go.

Bit curious to know why a post thread on the Eurovision Song Contest is in the MUSIC heading? !!!!

This contest is basically funded by the UK, France, Germany and Spain and I believe the BBC licence payers pay the UK fund which I understand is 40% of the whole cost of Eurovision.

It is about time that the UK ie BBC stopped funding this crass out of date freak show. Even if Take that or Elton John were performing for the UK we would never ever win again due to the block voting from the little tin-pot countries in the Eastern-bloc.

Obviously Germany won't withdraw from funding seeing that they won last year but Spain and France, like the UK will never ever win again so let's withdraw our funding and see if it eventually survives. It only gets about 7 million UK viewers anyway, less than some soaps.

Eurovision has always been about country friendships but I think this year it was a bit different. Yes some of the East European countries stuck together like Romania giving 12 points to Moldavia the vice versa or in the West neighbours giving eachother points like 12 from Belgium to France. But when you look at the Nordic countries, numbers look different than in the past years.

I agree with you on the funding issue but you also have to admit that Eurovision is a big opportunity for singers from countries like Azerbaijan to show what they can do.

But the UK don't have any friends in Europe since we ended up being one of the world's police forces and entering so many wars.....the rest of Europe just don't like us.....

As the UK gave 12 points to our neighbour Ireland, who were represented by the talentless Jedward, I think all Brits have forfeited the right to criticise any other nation for voting for their neighbours.

Same old nonsense is spouted out every year. It really gets tiresome.

France is one of the major players in the current NATO campaign in Libya. So does this mean the rest of Europe hates them too, and why their entry, the bookies' favourite to win, finished the evening with even fewer points than the UK?

It doesn't actually cost that much for the BBC in the grand scheme of things, and a large amount of people enjoy it (even the semi finals pulled a decent audience for BBC Three). I and a lot of others pay the licence fee and enjoy Eurovision so why should we pull out?

We've proved in 2009 and this year (not so much), that when we enter a half decent song we can do respectably, so all the crap about Europe hating us is bullsh*t! We fairly consistently got low points from a lot of countries last night, showing that they did like our song; they just thought that others were better!

I really don't get this mentality that we have the right to win it every other year or it means the rest of Europe hates us

Totally agree. It's the same mentality as the people who seem to think it's our God-given right to win the World Cup every four years, because we invented football!

Sorry but what TF has that got to do with a light hearted music competition?
Those who dont like it really shouldnt put themselves through the pain of watching it. It isnt bloody rocket science
I cant stand all the dancing shows on tv, so guess what? I dont watch them and dont moan about them as I know others DO like it. There are so many pathetic childish comments from music snobs who really need to grow up

i think its because historically we always did very well, from our first win in 67 to possibly 81 we were always in the running, winning or finishing highly placed. we are possibly still living on past glories or expecting them. in truth we have just lost our ability to create a catchy pop song that appeals to the rest of europe.

i doubt very much that this song contest is taken so seriously that countries will vote against us, despite the quality of our song, just because 'they dont like us'... i mean, a muslim country has just won and muslims arnt the most popular of peoples! europe is largely catholic so i think that that would have impacted upon the results IF there was any genuine dislike for any group of peoples.

i think that the old 'europe hates us' is just a feeble excuse for us producing poor quality music (for eurovision).

I dunno, I'd argue is wasn't necessarily a case of us falling behind but more a case of Europe catching up.

Love song duets are v pop in the Mediterranean countries and the song was by far the most viewed Eurovision entry on youtube so no big surprise for me.

I think the Swedish entry could have won if it didn't just repeat the same words over and over and France if they'd chosen an operatic singer with a more interesting voice like Stanislas.

Exactly. We would not send a Sunday pub team to the Football World Cup, yet for the best part of a decade we've been sending has-beens and nobodies to Eurovision, The one exception being when we got Andrew Lloyd Webber to write a song (that was not from his top tier of songs) and got the lead out of the West End Musical The Lion King to sing it and we came 5th.

To be honest Blue came about where I expected for that performance & song; As the song was average, the presentation was less good, and as a vocal quartet they were much better vocally live in their heyday than they were last night.

When the UK sends a great singer with a catchy/memorable song, then with a decent draw we will stand a very good chance of winning again. Until then we wont.

PS. Back in March I put money on France & Azerbaijan to win the contest because I thought they were both great songs, at far better odds then they were come the night of the final.

The French opera singer blew it with pitching problems on the night so deservedly fell away in the voting; and Azerbaijan with a very good draw won.

I am in full agreement with all the posters who have rightfully dismissed the accusation that "Europe hates us" as rubbish. Europe does not hate us. However, I have to add that when we enter songs like Cry Baby by Jemini (2003), Flying The Flag by Scooch (2007) and, worst of all, that dross composed by Pete Waterman (2010), then Europe is entitled to hate us!

We don't give a shit about Eurovision, and I think it's been painfully clear over the years to Europeans. Unless we put proper effort into it, why should we be rewarded highly?

By no means are we the only offenders of ridiculously bad novelty acts, but we're arguably one of the most prominent countries in the competition...and the repeat offending will have no doubt given us a bad reputation.

Jade Ewen/ALW and Blue have shown that we can do respectably well when we do try...and neither were that good. If we properly gave it a go (i.e. good song and good act that would be successful outwith Eurovision) we'd be laughing.

I wouldn't call it bitching, just mild ribbing. I think Graham Norton does a very good as a Eurovision commentator, he's a definite improvement on Terry Wogan, who may have been amusing at the start of his tenure, but was doing little more than delivering thinly veiled xenophobic rants towards the end of it. Terry Wogan ended up being a bigger embarrassment than some of the songs we were entering.

it's a nice enough song. Me and a mate sat with the scoresheets and we both had this one at about 14th.

Some countries we absolutely loved (Estonia) did dreadfully though, and we were gobsmacked at how well others did (Bosnia and Italy!)

Jade Ewen/ALW and Blue have shown that we can do respectably well when we do try...and neither were that good. If we properly gave it a go (i.e. good song and good act that would be successful outwith Eurovision) we'd be laughing.
Completely agree. The two years we actually put effort into it we do got respectable marks. Jades 5th place was a fantastic result and proof that the whole 'nobody likes us' excuse is rubbish.

God knows why they followed up Andrew Lloyd Webber with that godawful Pete Waterman tripe!
