Just an idea...

Each episode an envelope is delivered to the house and inside the envelope is the name of the two PMs for that given task. In other words, the candidates can't decide, Sugar decides.

This method would make the quiet candidates (such as Alex) be more concerned. They could be picked at any time.

Choosing to be PM is part of the game. It'd be a shame to lose it.

Indeed - though the calculation is impossible. If you hang back you are vulnerable to the invisible charge. If you go early you are on the line as PM and you have big teams, unknown people and all the incompetents and big gameplayers are there to ruin your effort. If you win early you may be forgotten. On the other hand, if Lord Sugar spots you are competent to do what he wants early, and you don't tick any of his stock negatives (like Stella) you may effectively win the show very early on.

I like that people choose to be the PM, however there have been times before when suralan has chosen the PM, and chosen people who he feels need to prove something to him

There are multiple winning strategies. Flying under the radar isn't really one of them. In my view, the main disadvantage to being PM early is that it puts you in the spotlight before you have a track record. However, if you avoid being PM until later, you're doing yourself no favours unless you make yourself visible in other ways, because that's how you get a good track record. And if you do that, you can't be accused of being invisible.

If you go early you are on the line as PM and you have big teams, unknown people and all the incompetents and big gameplayers are there to ruin your effort.
However, the other team has the same problems so you aren't at a disadvantage. And people do make allowances for the difficulty.

And there is definitely kudos in being the first to volunteer. Although it doesn't do to harp on about it in the boardroom; if it seems that's the only reason to keep you, you'll be gone. It's helped save a mediocre leader, though.

In my view, the fact that you have more incompetents, game players etc is actually a benefit. It means you as PM should find it easy to identify two candidates who are worse than you and deserve to be fired instead of you.

If you win early you may be forgotten.
I think in the UK show you have to be good all the way through. You hide in the shadows and just stand out at the end, any more than you can only be good at the start. The American version is very different in this.

Also, if Lord Sugar does forget your early good performance, you can remind him. By being PM early you've given yourself an argument you can use in later boardrooms when you have to defend yourself.
