The Ratings Thread (Part 20)
Quote:
Embarrassing numbers there for BBC1, primetime on a Saturday, minutes after a 6.3m peak, and with awful and mundanely-rating competition on ITV. Looks like The Two Ronnies was even closer to BBC1 than I thought.
Perhaps the Beeb should put some Ronnies repeats on BBC1 at 7.15 on Saturdays for the summer? Seems odd that the Luther trailers have been airing at least a fortnight now if it's not airing now till June. And, depending on slot, but Lee Mack's show could bomb if the weather is as nice in June/July as some are hoping. Totally Saturday Mark II. Really can't see the point in airing big new shows in June and July as the weather is at its best (one hopes - or was that April?) and people are on holiday. |

Looking at BBC Press Office, it looks like 'Egypt: What Lies Beneath' - a 90-minute documentary - will be shown on Sunday 29th May. - 'Lee Mack's All Star Cast' will most likely be starting on Saturday 18th June. That's because each episode will be recorded on the previous Wednesday and according to SRO Audiences, its first episode films on 15th June.. The FOX schedule will be interesting tomorrow just to see where The X Factor is scheduled, I'm thinking Wednesday and Thursday like Idol was. Terra Nova will definetly get an X Factor but I think it'll just get 13 episodes due to filming and post production schedule, it starts filming regular episodes in June.

I'd have loved this to be around in the seventies when ratings were enormous and you flopped if your show didn't get at least 10 million viewers. Larry Grayson's Generation Game gets 19 million, Bruce's Big Night only 9, is this the end for Bruce Forsyth? ( It looked like it at the time, but two years later he was back with Play Your Cards Right and 17 million viewers. Larry meanwhile got wiped out by Game for a Laugh.)

The thing is (in regards to the BBC airing new shows in June/July) they should be able to do this - they're not reliant on commercial pressures, and should be able to take into account lower figures and measure how a programme would then build on it in the autumn.winter. It'd be best to air self contained dramas/comedies over this period, rather than series as viewers can they drop in and out of them depending on holidays etc.
I recall the Beeb getting lots of complaints in the late 80s and early 90s for lack of new programming in Summer months. Fast forward 20 years and we've got shiny, expensive drama airing in the hottest months of the year in the guise of Sherlock and Luther. And IIRC Sherlock got upper 8m's anyway during July/August last year. Sure it might get 10/11m during Winter but if the share is good, it's a winner in my opinion. |

Luther is currently placed for Sun/Mon 4/5 and 11/12 June, but may run Mon/Tues instead, still not certain.

With the Beeb starting promotion for it a month in advance, which is very rare for any show unless you're called Doctor Who, they clearly are desperate for it to start off at a much more respectable level than where the last series finished off at (3.7m). The first series averaged 4.4m in the overnights, I wouldn't be surprised if the upcoming one rates a bit better in its new format. I can't see it starting as high as last series (5.8m) but neither do I see it dropping as low as it fell last year (3.1m). Edit: Just realised the first two episodes will be up against ITV drama, so maybe it won't rate as well as I'd hoped. |

I wonder if there will be more Piers Morgan Life Stories.
This series hasn't exactly done the numbers has it ? |

So it's going to be 4x60m rather than 2x2hours? Make more scheduling sense although I think you mean 5/6 and 12/13 as 4th and 11th of June are Saturdays. I imagine it'll be edited internationally as 3x90m so they can squeeze in commercials.

Looking forward to Luther, a certainly wannabe Drag Queen, is in my bad books tonight.
As for Terra Nova, who knows when that will hit TV, last I heard it was taking far too long to film. |

Thanks. The second series was commissioned as 2x120' but by the sounds of that, it looks like they'll be splitting it into four 60-minute episodes over two weeks. That sounds better as a 2-hour episode would've been tough going, with no ad breaks, and would've meant a late finish.

This series hasn't exactly done the numbers has it ? With Penn and Teller returning on the 18th (provisionally), there is a 1 week gap between it and BGT - do we have any idea what's going to fill it? Live Millionaire? I think Penn and Teller will do OK with 4-5m, which is far better than any other show ITV have aired on Summer Saturdays in recent years. Is Popstar To Operastar definitely going on Sundays as with Scott and Bailey at 9pm there isn't room for the planned separate results shows planned so either it's moving night's or being merged into 1 show again. |

It's definitely airing on just Sundays, as stated on SRO Audiences. I think it'll probably run as one combined show, between 7-9pm/7.30-9pm/8-9pm, depending on the no. of acts in it.

'Injustice' is looking very likely to be stripped over five nights from Monday 6th June. They had a press screening the other day where they said it'll be shown in "early June" and the DVD release date suggests it'll be stripped over the week after BGT live finals.

Stripping Injustice is a good idea as it's from the same writer as Collision which did very well. As for Popstar, that seems OK but I'm surprised that they're using it as a lead in for Scott and Bailey as the last series didn't do that well.
