At the end of the day though, whilst rzt and others(including yourself) do a fabulous job in providing a fantastic array of facts and figures, the thread would not really work without opinions sparked by them -even if they can sometimes be controversial. I applaud the efforts of anyone taking time to provide figures but there is so much daily stuff there isnt much else thats needed.

Onto tonight, how do we think Scott and Bailey will do? On one hand it has the BGT lead-in, however it faces Pirates of the Caribbean which did bring 7m a few weeks ago if I remember correctly.

Aside from what we've seen recently, I hadn't seen the soap demos in a while so it came as a surprise when I saw EastEnders was top in the week for 16-34s, even ahead of Britain's Got Talent. That's very impressive. Prince Phillip at 90 had a very old audience, highly upmarket for an ITV1 show though (47% ABC1s).

Sky Sports 1 coverage averaged 1.34m (6%), peaking at 2.25m (8.6%).

Media Guardian should have more details on Monday but by my reckoning, the match average on Sky Sports would've been ~2m. So the ITV: Sky match ratio for this year's Champions League Final was roughly 5.2 to 1 (we should have a confirmed ratio tomorrow - could be as low as 4.9/5.0 to 1). That would be an improvement for Sky compared to the 5.4: 1 ratio for the last final to involve an English club (2009).

I'm not sure if Sky Sports beat ITV1 in Sky Sports-only homes. I know it was pretty close in 2009. If mlt11 is around, he might know, as he's usually good at calculating that stuff out.

Scott and Bailey will do fine. AFAIA the Pirate sequels have never done as well as the original, and an 11.20pm finish is terribly late for a family film.

Whilst I agree that so many contribute to this thread, you stand out rzt, with DMN second...

'Ratings Thread' was the place to be for the Royal Wedding for example - the most in-depth, even-handed commentary of its ratings for such a landmark occasion.

Rarely on a forum thread can something be contributed to so often and have the same regulars coming back year after year either.

Not going to pretend my contributions are often worthwhile, neither am I going pretend that I contribute as much as I should (what with the information I have) - but it's always such a joy to read - all the well-meaning debate and differing interpretations (under-predictions! over-predictions!) and all the banter.

Having been here since 2007, I've been here to see it grow and grow. I think it really took off once ratings got exciting again after a quiet few years...Britain's Got Talent hitting 19m peak in 2009 was a big moment - what with a breaking news banner on DS and massive reaction on here. That's something I'll always remember.

Back to ratings of today - ITV should be pleased that the Barca/Utd match rated exactly the same as it did in 2009, with a higher peak as well. Obviously the game was a tad more exciting, but everyone's been complaining about it being on a Saturday, me included - it just doesn't feel right.

On the other hand, I still think this match would've got higher ratings if it was on a Wednesday - I think this year's final had more interest than the '09 one, Van der Sar and Scholes's last game, plus the whole revenge thing too.

More importantly, on Wednesday nights, people would be more likely to stay in (with work in the morning) which would maximise the figures. Lots more people in pubs yesterday I would guess which can distort the ratings somewhat.

I agree with PJ, the ratings for TXF and BGT finals in 2009 made me think I was back in the good old days when the BBC One Saturday line up's ratings used to get me excited. Speaking of which, from November 1978, BBC One held the top three places with Larry Grayson's Generation Game, Some Mothers Do Ave Em and All Creatures Great and Small. Also the big story that month was what a flop Bruce Forsyth's Big Night was with, wait for it, only 9 million viewers. Bruce's Big Flop, these days ITV would prostitute itself to get these ratings for a run of the mill entertainment show.

Yeah, Scott & Bailey should be good for at least a high 5 rating, I'd have thought, maybe even 6m+. It's got a plum slot off the back of one of ITV's biggest shows, it's a crime drama which typically perform well for them especially on Sundays, the critics seem to like it and it's had a lot of promotion, including a two-page spread in a few of the papers.

Pirates won't rate anywhere near as well this week I don't think. As you've pointed out the sequels generally haven't rated as well, and it's up against a big movie premiere on C4. The late finish isn't as much of an issue as it normally would with it being a Bank Holiday tomorrow, but it will affect C4 more as their film is considerably longer.

C5 were going to show a movie premiere but took one look at the competition and instead gave up for the night with an all repeat lineup. Their only hope is that the POTC documentary might act as a good warmup show for some of the 4m or so that will watch the movie on BBC One.

LOL, this being the era when TOTP pulled in 16 million viewers at times. I reckon 11 million of them were men waiting for Pans People.

It probably did get more viewers, overall. As you rightly pointed out, people are more inclined to watch at home on a Wednesday evening. (didn't a mid-week England group game (WC 2006) get the highest rating of the tournament)

I'd imagine the public audience (bars, pubs etc) for last night's game would have been huge. Shame we'll never know the true figure.

The writing during the Masood scene was bloody brilliant and so was the comedy scene's and classic One-Liners from Lydia but the rest was crap and after Mon,Tues,Thurs brilliant episodes too.

I don't think tommorow will rate that high anyway and im expecting it to rate at it's lowest

I predict for ITV's big three this week ( averages), Emmerdale 7 million, BGT 10 million, Coronation St 8 million. EE could be damaged this week against BGT and could fall to below 7 million.

Benjamin Button is a marathon!! A 2h 40m film in a 3h 10m slot, finishing after midnight.

In the old days it was known for long running films to be split and shown over two nights.

Mind you in those days they had an interval in the cinema, which I don't think they do nowadays.

The Godfather is only eight minutes longer than Button and that has been shown over two nights on the BBC with no ad breaks.

If Corrie averages 8million it's completely flopped. I'm expecting 10m.

I noticed on a breakdown on another forum that Channel 4 were not competitive at all yesterday lunchtime when the Paralympic World Cup was on (12pm-2pm). The audience was not much above 100k throughout, beaten comprehensively by all the other main channels, with the share at one point dipping as low as 0.9%. As soon as C4 Racing started it recovered to around 4% audience share.

Golf on BBC2 went to a play-off, the 7pm Top Gear showing has been scrapped.

I'd be really interested by the DEMOGRAPHIC shifts in the viewing figures,and wether there has been a decline in an older age-group viewer.

Personally,as an older DW fan (I remember William Hartnell),I feel the show has skewed to a younger demographic in it's writing,and again,purely from my own perspective,I find the Rory aspect of the show redundant.

Just a personal viewpoint.
