I'm currently on Orange contract and have looked up calling Canada and the rates, problem is, it doesn't specify if the rate is so a Canadian landline or Canadian registered mobile

I'll be giving Orange CS a call later to clarify but, what networks have people used to call abroad and who appears to offer the best deal, contract or PAYG

I don't think it matters for Canada whether it is a landline or a mobile.

They use something called "called party pays" where the cost of connection is bourne by the person taking the call, not the person making it.

So mobiles are charged at the same rate as landlines.

A quick check shows Lebara at 5ppm and Lyca mobile at 4ppm to Canada, both landlines and mobiles.

I'm not sure about the 'called party pays' part

Why should my friend have to pay anything at all for taking an international call

He/she will be well used to it- indeed according to this blogger many people in the US and Canada find *our* system odd. http://www.voip.com/blog/2008/05/pro...arty-pays.html It's just what you are used to.

I don't think they charge users anymore for taking international calls than taking local ones, BTW. In effect, you pay for the transatlantic leg of the call from the UK to Canada and your friend will pay for the connection from there to his/her cell phone./

The cost of taking an incoming call is exactly the same whether it's local, national or international. If you're on a contract, it comes out of your monthly minutes, and if you're PAYG you pay your normal per-minute rate for taking a call. Basically, you have to get used to the fact that being in a call costs the same whether you made the call or took it.

To get around this, a lot of contracts here in the USA are unlimited in minutes, although I'm not sure if there is an FUP attached to that.
