Technisat have told me that the files on one's hard-disk (connected to an HDFS) are encrypted because Freesat requires such -- how annoying!

Is this all files or some HD content?

My understanding is that it applies to all programmes flagged in the EPG with an Encryption flag. Currently broadcasters flag most HD programmes.
Different STB manufactures seem to have taken differing approaches to this as follows:
1. As described encrypt flagged programmes.
2. Allow no disk access - no copying to USB.
3. Encrypt everything.
4. Encrypt everything and allow non flagged programmes to be decrypted on copy.

I think you will find with this box all recordings are protected.

The unit formats the drive in its own format and even if you backup a file to a flash card it will still only play on the box that recorded it.

This gadget of course is not actually Freesat+ but more like Freesat with the ability to record added.

I can't understand the philosophy behind the encryption. You can buy a nice Panasonic Freesat "box" that can burn bluray disks for about £700. Does Panasonic have to pay freesat royalties or such for being able to produce this?

There are VERY strict restrictions on the Panasonic BluRay recorder - you can't produce multiple copies of a protected program, and the copies are copy protected as well.

In any case, it wouldn't be Freesat they would need to pay - it would be the copyright holders, Freesat is just an EPG.
