Just returned from the States, and while there I got a tablet to play about with, use for surfing etc.

Got a Velocity Cruz T301 (Ipads being rarer over there than diet portions) which supports the following video formats:

MPEG-4, H.264, H.263, MOV, AVI video support

Noticed on the plane there and back that a lot of people were watching films and TV shows on their Ipads, Iphones etc.

Just wondered how you manage to get these onto your tablet?

Aside from some DVD's coming with digital versions to download, the only other way I could think of doing this legally (as in not downloading from the web ) is to rip a DVD onto your PC, change the format and then load it onto the tablet.

Is this right and if so what's the best software to do it (preferably free)?

Any advice (aside from "buy yourself a ........" ) please?

I looked into this recently and I think that what you have assumed is exactly correct!

You need to rip a DVD, convert to mp4 and resize for the portable device. Various software packages can do these in one operation. Then iTunes can transfer the resulting video file to the device (for Apples obviously!)

I tried the Aiseesoft software - plenty of others available via Google - and it seemed to work well. (http://www.aiseesoft.com/dvd-to-ipad-converter.html)

Doesnt it take an age to convert the files to MP4 ? I tried converting once and about 8 hours later it was only about 15% converted.

Not that long! I have only done one movie so far as an experiment (James Bond "Casino Royale") and, AFAIR, it was something like 40 minutes to do the entire process (on a core i7 desktop). This was using the Aiseesoft software I described. The converted movie looks really good when played on my iPad!

I will try again with another DVD soon!

I use Freemake video converter, has presets for most video codecs, and will rip directly to MP4, AVI etc,

A 2hr movie takes about 20 mins to complete.

Available http://www.freemake.com/ here

That looks like just the ticket (though looking at the website I might have to brush up on my German ).

Do I have to 'Rip' the DVD first before I use this, or does it do the whole thing?

If so, what would you recommend for that?

You will need ripping software which will circumvent the encryption on a DVD, which is essentially illegal, so can't be discussed on here. What I will say is search for Magic DVD Ripper - I have this and it does the trick. If you have files already on your pc and want to convert them into different formats, I would suggest a program called SUPER.

I downloaded some TV shows from UKNova and used vplayer (* I think) to watch them on my Android. It seems to handle xvid ok.

Thanks for the advice. I never saw a thing, honestly.

But it does make you wonder, with the growth of smart-phones, tablets etc, where are you, legitimately and legally, supposed to download movies and TV shows to watch on these things?

As I've mentioned earlier, there are DVD's that include digital copies, but they are still few & far between, and mean you have to purchase the DVD in the first place.

That's currently where the iPad does have an advantage over its competition, because there's a store, ready made for you to buy and download from.

That said if the rumours are true about an Amazon tablet or phone, they'll have access to a ton of content ready for you to load your device.

It's really up to the device manufacturers or the OS makers to do deals with the TV companies/movie studios so they can populate a store, the same as Apple have.

Try Handbrake to convert video formats. It's dead easy to use. Doesn't take too long to convert a DVD to MP4 or whatever you want.

Thanks for all the help guys (or gals). Managed to rip a Dr Who DVD, load it onto the SD card, and watch on the tablet fine, but I've another question.

For the Cruz T301, most people recommend updating the browser from the built-in one to Skyfire 4.

However, as the Cruz isn't a phone most of the App stores won't entertain it, so how the **** are you supposed to download these?

With Android tablets that don't have access to Android Market, people root their devices and install custom ROMs on them which include Android Market.

xdadevelopers forum is worth a google and see if they have ROMs for your particular tablet.

I had a quick search on modaco and couldn't see any reference to the Velocity Cruz T301. Hopefully it's a clone of another device that has custom ROMs available.

Okay, not as easy as I thought.

Obviously can't go into details here (though from what I read aren't we okay to rip CD's/DVD's for use on digital devices now) but when I next tried to "ahem" a DVD the program I had said "can't do it, but paid-for version can".

So, I've got the file conversion bit sorted, down to suggestions from the collective, but could anyone PM me with any ideas how I can perform the first part of the process for the least capital outlay (if you know what I mean)

Okay, tried to download Freemake as recommended, but it doesn't seem to so anything.

Installed the program, and .NET as it asked, but when you click on the icon on-screen you get a box which says Freemake, then starting, then.......nothing.

Am I missing something?

Another piece of advice please.

Generally speaking, which is the best video format to use, quality-wise, that uses the smallest space?

My tablet is compatible with the following:

MPEG-4, H.264, H.263, MOV, AVI video support

I've ripped a 45 minute Dr Who episode to MPEG-4, and it was just over 500GB's. I then ripped a newspaper freebie half-hour comedy to AVI and it came in at just over 350GB's.

Obviously, to conserve memory, I'm looking at the best quality but taking up as little space as possible.

Any advice?

well, about the freemake, i used that for a while, but it seems only supports rip unprotected DVD movies and has limited output formats and portable devices. Handbreak is cool too for copy dvd to tablet for enjoyment but sometimes the ound - tracks out of sync which is alway annoy me...

Legal ways are Amazon prime, iPlayer and I think Netflix soon will allow to download. Sky also

But they all do push towards the easier illegal ways.

I bought a Blu-ray came with digital version. I had to create several accounts and download another app and loss about. Bit of a pain
