I must admit I was a bit worried about getting a touch phone, that is why I got myself a cheap Vodafone touch screen phone and stuck a sim only contract card in it.

Not the best phone, but it did show me that I could use a touch screen phone.

On what phone to get that depends on what you want it to do and how much you want to pay.

I got the HTC wildfire, it is a budget phone, if you can call nearly £180 budget. But I like the phone it works well. If you can afford it or think it is worth it then go for one of the higher end HTC phones like the Desire.

I looked at a Samsung Galaxy a couple of days back, a mate of mine have just got one, it is ok, but it is certainly different to the HTC layout.

i find it easier to text on my HTC touch screen than I thought it would be and now prefer it to keys.

£350... htc Desire S
£400... Samsung Galaxy SII

You won't go wrong with any of these, if on a tighter budget choose the Galaxy Ace or the wildfire S, both around £200.

Last years handsets which are good value now but I wouldn't expect official updates for them past 2.3....

Wildfire - £130 low resolution, Android 2.2, really fragmented App selection.
Desire - £220 Good feature set and upgradable to 2.3. Low onboard memory.
Galaxy S - £300 Last year's flagship from Samsung.

The HTC Sensation will also be out soon and will compete with the Galaxy SII.

If you want to get a cheap touch screen then look no further than the Orange San Fransico. It can be unlocked for free and is also easy to upgrage. It as a much much better screen than either the Wildfire and Ace but only costs about £80.

The wildfire is a nice little phone, the Wildfire S offer a faster processor, a slightly higher screen res and a bit more memory

But for someone who never really owned a smart phone before it is a good phone. My first Smart phone, if yo can call it that was a HTC S710, Windows based and slow as hell, so the wildfire is a major improvement and this is coming from someone who really not into smart phones, never saw the need for them.

For your next phone, maybe try a Windows Phone. They seem ideally suited for someone who has a smartphone without really being "into" smartphones.

For the OP, I'd recommend an HTC Desire S - IMO it's right blend of size, power, battery life, looks etc.

The HTC S710, was a windows phone, ok it was a old windows phone, but still windows based.
It will be a couple of years until I have another phone if I decide to have another one. If my wildfire phone is still working ok by the time my contract is up I may just go back to a sim only contract.

Battery life is the main problem with smart phones, but people who go for smart phones should know that anyway and be prepared to charge their phones up every night

Aye but that HTC S710 was a completely different OS and platform - that was Windows Mobile. Windows Phone is completely different.

Yeah, once you want to move on from your wildfire, it may be worth a look; WP is incomplete now but by the time you're ready I imagine it will be very competitive. Looks like the autumn update of WP will put it on a competitive footing with android and iOS.

I've seen a lot of people with Wildfires, tbh, I don't think you can get a real smartphone experience on such a small screen especially for things like browsing. As someone who has one, how do you feel about it?

The Sensation will be at least £500 I reckon. HTC aren't cheap and rightly so... their build quality is fantastic.

To who ever asked about the wildfire... (sorry forgot to multi-quote)

I owned a wildfire, in fact two of them, one for me and one for the wife, and they are severely limited. The resolution excludes loads of Apps, it's slow and then you have to zoom zoom zoom away in to read text during browsing. The camera pics looked awful on the handset but once loaded on a PC where decent. It's definately the screen that let it down. We moved onto Galaxy S's for a while and then ditched them for Desire S's... which is probably the best decision I have made.

True, it was pretty basic, but it did the job I wanted it for, it was just slow. I got it with Bt broadband anywhere, which I thought was a good idea, sadly as normal Bt did not do anything with it and when the phone started playing up and BT wanted me to pay £150 for a p[hone that was way out of date, I can't remember the model now it was a HTC touchscreen, I went for a Vodafone sim only contract and got myself a cheap Vodafone touch screen phone. My first venture into touch screen

Unless the phone have a problem and stop working I can't see myself needing to change.
I like Android, I still feel a bit iffy about Google mind you, that is why location is switch off.

I only use Windows on my computer because I got very little choice, sure Windows 7 is better than other Windows, but I don't think I want another phone with Windows.

It may also fail, MS have not really got anywhere in the mobile phone market, the new windows phones will have to be amazing to compete with Android never mind the Iphone.

My mates galaxy phone have a even smaller screen.

I don't browse that much anyway, even on the Iphone I tried I found it a pain, to much moving around the screen to find something. If the site is made for mobiles then it is okish.

I use my phone mainly as a phone, I use friend stream to have a nose on facebook and I get my emails, that is useful.

At the end of the day I find all phone screens too small, that is why I got a nice 22 inch monitor stuck to my tower, I don't even use my laptop that often as I think the screen is too small.

The phone does what I want and a lot more that I don't want, so as I said before, unless it goes wrong after the 24 months I can't see myself changing, I may just go down to a sim only contract again.

It is a budget phone, what do you expect?

It does what I want, ok it may not be for everyones tastes and if you used smartphones before them maybe it is a bit limited.
It can be a bit slow, but what do you expect with a 500Mhz processor? The wildfire s is bit faster.

I got very few apps to be honest, I saw our security guard Iphone at work last week and the screen was full of apps, and he admitted that most of them he don't use.

The build quality of the wildfire is good, the one niggle I do have is battery life, but that is the same with most smart phones.

While it wasn't my first Smartphone, it was my first Android.

Yeah you're right it is a "budget" phone... at the time I thought I was getting more bang for my buck. To be honest it was the fragmentation of the market that got me, due to the resolution, the slowness of the handest only became apparent after I upgraded.

The price from Orange has gone back up to £100 plus £10 initial top up but this would be a superb phone for £150. It has a 800x480 screen and it can be unlocked to work on any network for free. It is a no-bullshit, honest bargain.

I bought mine a couple of weeks ago when Orange had it on sale for £80 plus £10, but I'm running it on 3 UK and still boggling at the excellent value and hinting to my son that he should consider buying one even at the higher price, because there isn't anythng else that comes close for even twice the price.

Fair enough, different people need different things or think they need different things.

Next door neighbour is saying that she is due for a upgrade, the phone she have got works well and to be honest does what she wants , so I said she should try and keep the phone and get a reduction in her subscription

It is only a basic Samsung flip phone

A mate of mine gone for a Iphone.

Depends on what you want.

The wildfire does what I want, sure if I had one of the higher end models I would not complain, but I don't see the point in paying out another £10 or more a month for a phone that does more or less what mine does but a bit faster.
