well, I've tried Splashtop, and it's very interesting, and I think I'll keep it because it might have it's uses, but it has serious issues on my system.

a) Everything is very laggy on the tablet. Scolling is very slow, and any video is jerky.
I tried recorded video, and also live TV from my TV card, and while the playback is smooth on the computer monitor, it is jerky on the tablet. This might be down to the fact that my computers are quite old Pentium 4 machines, and while they run Windows 7 smoothly, they may not have the oomph for streaming?

b) In order to stream audio to the tablet you have to set the computer to output stereo. My computers are set for 4 channel audio, which doesn't produce any sound when connected to Splashtop, so I have to keep changing the audio properties.

c) Windows Media Center will not play full screen. Other things will, but not WMC. When you try to set it to full screen you get an error message and the screen resolution messes up.

d) when you disconnect from Splashtop, and the screen resolution returns to normal in Windows, the screen gadgets are often not displaying properly, requiring logging out and back in again.

So all in all, it's interesting, might be useful to me under certain circumstances, but certainly not a perfect solution.
Sorry to state the obvious (cos it wasn't obvious to me!) but I had all those problems on my Xoom UNTIL i rebooted it, then everything worked without lag.

Sorry about the gadgets - it doesn't move my icons around so I assumed it wouldn't do it with gadgets either.

Just to add, I took my XOOM to work today, came back and everything was choppy again. Rebooted the Xoom and everything was working lag free again. Not sure why this is happening.

Well my Xoom wifi is going back to PC World. Bored of waiting for basic bugs to be fixed by Motorola's refusal to issue 3.1. I mentioned how their listing still states a MicroSD slot, yet it doesn't work. There is no caveat like on Amazon that a software upgrade is required to enable this, thus it is not entirely as sold. Added to this, sometimes it refuses to charge, which no doubt is another bug. Anyhow, due to a combination of the two, they are giving a full refund (had it since release) and collecting tomorrow. Will buy a Galaxy tab 10.1 next, which ships with 3.1, as not fussed about SD card

And just to add insult to injury, new Xoom's and those purchased in July are being offered with a free keyboard and mouse. Yet again they screw the early adopters. Why not offer accessories to all Xoom owners, its not like there are many.

I feel that I have wasted £480 for something that isn't finished. This experience with Motorola has confirmed that I will never buy another product of theirs. Why is Motorola unable or unwilling to upgrade any of the UK Xoom tablets?

If you check this link out, and go to page 2, I'm about to try this out. It looks straight forward.

http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/moto...t-3-1-a-2.html

The only thing they don't mention is how to get the driver working. The answer to that is to turn on debugging so that the adb command can detect the Xoom properly. Link to that is:

http://blogs.computerworld.com/17881..._how_to_fix_it

Also, I applied through the Xoom UK promotion web site for the free Bluetooth mouse and keyboard even though I got the Xoom in May and it was on contract so I didn't have a receipt. I sent them a confirmation email I had which was just a plain text email that I saved as a jpeg and sent to them through the site. I got them both today, 3 days after I applied for them.

The mouse doesn't work in 3.01 which is why I'm about to go to US 3.1. Following the instructions above should still get you access to the UK market etc.

Fingers crossed.

Ok it worked.

The only things to note when you enter

adb reboot bootloader

it looks like its rebooting but it's actually ready to accept commands.

You will have to accept some terms and conditions to after you enter fastboot oem unlock which you do with the volume buttons.

It'll wipe your data. Once it's wiped and rebooted go back and enter

adb reboot bootloader

to finish entering the other commands.

It's installing 3.1 now.

Edit: And after a reboot, it's just installed 3.2

Mine found 3.2 this morning, as apparently it was rolling out last night in america too. I like the zoom-in feature for small-screen apps, and SD card support.

Thanks for the tip-off about the keyboard promotion. I have now registered, even though I bought the Xoom in May.
They can only say no.

I'd already taken the photo of my receipt with another camera, before I realised that you had to apply using your Xoom, so I copied the jpeg across to the Xoom and uploaded it. Hope they don't insist that the photo was taken by the Xoom camera? Don't see why they should?

I don't feel confident about trying to flash the US operating system on to it, so I guress I'll have to wait till the UK get's 3.1.
I presume the fact that the offer includes a bluetooth mouse means it must be coming soon? Or do all new UK Xooms come with 3.1 now?

Having to flash a US rom sort of defeats the object to me, given the Xoom is the flagship Honeycomb device. We pay a premium for the product and then receive zero support from both Motorola and (in my case) PC World. It should have been made clear prior to purchase that it was not a Google Experience Device, and that we would be at Motorola's mercy for updates.

I have no issues with bugs in software as long as they are rectified as soon as possible, which appears to be the case in the US. Whilst the UK (non-rooted/flashed community) awaits 3.1 (is it being sent yet?) to fix some pretty glaring errors, the US users are now receiving 3.2.

A free mouse that currently does not work would not cut it for me! Just awaiting the Galaxy Tab release now. Hope Samsung are better at updating than Motorola, but given early importers already have 3.1, I see no reason why not.

No problem with rooting per se, my HTC Desire has been running Gingerbread for months, but to have to do it to fix minor bugs is ridiculous.

I agree and I probably won't be buying another Motorola tab in the future because of this, even though I do like the hardware. It's the wall of silence from Motorola that annoys me the most.

The main reason I flashed mine was because the mouse wouldn't work with the OS properly! Probably go Asus next time, which is a pity as I do like the Xoom.

I went with the Asus as I just couldn't justify the extra money for the Xoom.

Looking at some of the problems here I have by luck made the right choice.

We are really at the mercy of the hardware manufacturer for updates it seems. I also have a HTC mobile, and the update to 2.3 is still up in the air, possibly arriving at the end of July.

I'm hoping that now my Xoom is US firmware, I'll continue to get prompt updates as it's now using GED software, not adjusted by Moto.

The thing is though Android 2.2 is a 'finished' OS, with regular minor bug fixes. The upgrade to Gingerbread is not really a necessity - I have it on a rooted Desire and to be honest you wouldn't really know any difference.

Honeycomb 3.01 is not 'finished', and is not likely to be until Ice Cream Sandwich is released. It was rushed to market to compete with the Ipad 2, and it suffers because of it. Especially as Motorola refuse to update the major bugs in the UK - some US users on 3.2 now. Very little has to be tweaked from their software to release in this country, but it just seems they have zero interest in doing so.

Just to say that Splashtop HD now works over the Internet. I was streaming a movie to it from my home PC to my Xoom located in my office, and it did surprisingly well.

You can get those free with some phones. I'd tend to wait until the new Galaxy 10.1 is out cos the 7" one will probably be even cheaper then. The 7" one is pretty cool in that you can also make phone calls on it though.

Sorry I'd have to google the honeycomb question and I dont have time!

It seems there's a new Galaxy Tab 7 coming out. http://androidcommunity.com/samsung-...read-20110615/

And an 8.7 version with honeycomb. I might wait for those.
