New Audio System to accompany new TV

Hi folks,

I was hoping i could tap the knowledge reserves here for some thoughts on audio set up for my TV. I bought this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-LE46.../dp/B003JEVQSE

I was considering a the full 5.1 home cinema sets, but not sure i really need this. I just want to something a little "punchier". So i think a 2.1 would suffice.

I was hoping for a bit of info on how these systems work with the TV. I.E does this TV still output to the standard speakers? Is it just a case of whatever input to the TV (i have a sky+ box and an Apple TV 2), the TV outputs the sound through the speakers via the optical out?

I'd be happy spending around £100-£200 on this.

Any adive greatly appreciated!

Cheers
Daniel

Yep - but stereo only. If you want to feed DD5.1 surround sound from your Sky box to your home cinema, you need to directly connect the two using a digital (optical or digital coaxial) connection. Not from the TV's optical out.

If i was to connect the Sky box directly to the speakers instead, would the sky box then only use the HDMI to the TV to send the video signal?

Thans for the reply

No, it would still send audio to the telly. Else, you wouldn't be able to hear Sky if you didn't have the home cinema switched on. That's why TVs have volume and mute buttons - so you can disable the TV audio if you want to listen to it through an external system.

Yes it will.

Usually if you have a 2.1, 5.1 or even 7.1 speaker system driven by a separate amplifier you would disable the TV speakers.

If you have Sky HD and/or DVD/BluRay you will get the most out of your system with a 5.1 rather than a 2.1 system as you will get full surround sound.

EDIT It WILL still send stereo sound to the TV but you would switch the TV speakers off if using an external audio system.

If you have a Richer Sounds near you give them a visit. They have some decent Onkyo kit at really keen prices.

I really appreciate you replying with advice, but don't see the need to tag that comment on the end there like i'm some dumb f**k. Just wanted to be clear.

And in case you want to act like there was no intent to sound like a smart arse with the comment at the end there - TV's have volume controls for people to control the volume, whether or not they have an external system.

Thanks for the other replies guys. I'll check those links out and will see where the nearest Richer Sounds are, a couple searches have led me to their website already. The reason i'm torn between maybe just going for the 2.1 and 5.1 is that alot of the stuff i watch is through the apple tv and hasn't got the surround sound within.

Thanks again for the replies.

Pretty well all digital stereo sources carry prologic II surround. Any modern amp will handle prologic II.
