Sony SLV-D950 DVD/VCR Combo

I have been given one of these and have found out that the DVD part doesn't like certain discs (i'm talking about Region 2's). I do understand that anything other than Region 2 won't work.

As it seems to be fussy about what DVD's (Region 2) that it will play, could this be a sign that its on its way out?

It's usually a sign that the laser is either dirty or failing.

Try cleaning it, if that doesn't work it will probably need a new laser.

I tried my lens cleaning CD in it...

"Cannot play this disc, please check the disc"

Tried a DVD that works in my Toshiba DVD/HDD Recorder, it loaded but went black screen when loading the menu. The front display kept switching between "Play" "Menu" and "00:00" and it also kept clicking. This DVD hasn't even got one little mark on it, its not brand new but the disc surface is immaculate! Sounds like it needs to be gone and get replaced for something that works!

These things are so temperamental, it seems. I recorded a DVD some time ago, one of a batch, recorded a series of programmes at weekly intervals and find that it won`t play, although it looks perfect. It starts OK on the first title for around 8 minutes then switches back to the start and does that over and over again (if I allow it to). If I try to play the second or subsequent titles it won`t do it. I have another DVD which again looks immaculate but won`t play anything at all and won`t allow itself to have anything done to it whatsoever -can`t be wiped, edited, titles deleted -just get a `no entry` sign when attempting to do so. Frustrating.
