HD Channel Sound copied to DVD
One reads of HD video quality suffering when copied to DVD..but does the excellent BBC sound suffer when a programme is copied to DVD..
We cannot see ourselves ever going into Blue-Ray but we do value the sound quality on many BBC recordings and have a reasonable Home Cinema.. The Upscaling of the TV is superb.. so it would be lovely to hear that the sound is as good as ever..or possibly it's channel related? Stan |

How is your HDR connected to the DVD recorder? If by SCART only then no chance of 5.1 sound on the recorded DVDs.
The only ways of transferring 5.1 sound are via optical or coaxial digital sound cables or via HDMI and I seriously doubt whether your (or any domestic) DVD recorder has such inputs. |

Assuming you have a source which contains the unencrypted bitstream there is an alternative--reencode the video to SD but leave the audio untouched. This can then be put on a DVD with the AC3 sound intact. Takes some time though! The freeware program Super should be able to do this, though I haven't tried it personally.
But if you have a decent home cinema setup a basic blu ray player is cheap enough, and then you can write to AVCHD with a DVD burner without reencoding anything. Much faster. |

Just to add roughly 50-60min of BBC-HD or BBC1-HD recorded without encryption will fit on a single layer DVD in AVCHD format with the full picture and audio quality. Double that using dual layer blanks. TSmuxergui (free) will create the folder structure required in a very short time. Imgburn (free) will burn the folders using the correct udf file system to dvd blanks. As Mwardy says a cheapo blu-ray player will replay these discs. A DVD player won't recognise them at all.

My thanks to you all..I do appreciate the effort involved.. and yes A BR player is no problem..infact it will improve my Street Cred with my Boys
Why have i not seen a LOGO to show me it actually plays ordinaryHomemade DVDs as well ![]() This belated reply is due to yet another unexpected extension in the Post Plasma Blow-up Lounge REORG... Wallpaper>>Curtains and NOW>>Curtain Rails.. The plastic curtain clips broke when taken off the rail and although only TEN years old they are already obsolete hence New Curtain Rails had to be fitted.. especially urgent in this Sunny Weeather as the new Curtains were delivered in only TWO days..standard postage £2.95..[I can recommend this company after 5 years with them if anyone PMs me] Just about to take TV off the wall and test the 5m Optical cable which will output the sound to the Home Cinema.. Am i overly optimistic that the output will be DD from the Humax HDMI input as well as from it's own Freeview HD Tuner.. It does not seem like Rocket Science to me to make it so.. |

What comes out of the TV s/pdif for an external digital sound input varies with the TV model. My Sony only outputs lpcm stereo for Dolby Digital input on HDMI. |
