I'm amazed, but completely gobsmacked that they didn't do what any one of us would have done and simply Googled 'cloche.'

I have a feeling they weren't allowed access to the net (from the way Jane Moore was talking on You're Fired).

Still, they should have used their nouse and phoned up another hotel and found out from them! Natasha had a golden opportunity to do that.

I know! It's almost like they were forbidden from using the internet or something...

I knew it is used in gardening but didn't know it is used in catering. With Yellow Pages there's always a man who knows.
The other team seemed to have no difficulty and were out of the room in no time. I'm afraid Gavin just did not inspire.

.
Yes me too, and I thus inferred it was some type of protector or covering.

Surely in this case they could have called another hotel to ask them what it was.

In their defence, a "cloche" can be any number of things:

I've only even known it to be the name of a hat.

That's the only cloche I knew of prior to last night.

I admit I wasn't 100% sure I call it a serving platter!

But when Natasha was on the phone to the hotel all she had to ask was what a cloche is and they would have known sraight away.

I mean surely even the thickest candidate would think its got something to do with what is seen in a hotel?!

I'm still somewhat gobsmacked that there are still people here who have not yet noticed that in not one single episode of one single series has anyone, ever, used google to find out anything.

I think it's perfectly clear that they are not allowed to.

Quite.

The candidates have never been allowed internet access in the buying tasks, but for some reason this year FMs seem to have forgotten that - or do we have a lot of first time viewers this year?

I know some of the candidates are pretty stupid, but to think that 14 people of the internet generation didn't think "Google", the week after an internet based task, is pretty daft in itself.

I'm not overly surprised that some of them did not know what a cloche was at first pass...as a catering item it is not generally found in a household kitchen , but watching them trying to pronounce it was pitiful. Do schools still teach French??

They're not allowed to use Google, fair enough. But why did no-one on that team just think to ask someone? That's the first thing that comes into your head, surely? "Excuse me I wonder if you could help me, my boss has just asked me to get him a cloche for a hotel and I don't know what it is."

Even assuming they find some unhelpful people on the end of the phone, it would take about 5 minutes of phoning random hotels to get this information.

I suspect that some of these tasks are set-ups to provide the audience with things to laugh at!

If they didn't know what it is, how would they know it was french?

I wonder how long you have to study french for, for 'cloche' to be part of the expected vocabulary?

I totally agree. In fact, I don't see why they are not constantly on the phone doing research and trying to re-source items throughout the whole day. And, as there seems to be only one phone per group, the ideas should be constantly be discussed and re-thought too. I don't understand how both teams only thought of buying a top hat from a hat shop! When they realised they were looking at spending £350, surely they would have realised there were cheaper places to get one from? A wedding shop maybe?

Sureley the fact that the Cloche had size and material specifitcations, it should have been easier to identify. How many things are 10" and made of stainless steel that a hotel would need? I know its not the only thing, but at least that should give them some idea
