If they didn't know it was French, why would they pronounce it "closh-ay"? Surely any English speaker who didn't know the word would pronounce it "closh" unless they were trying to be as pretentious as Del-boy Trotter?

Or even "clotch".

But they would surely be familiar with the word cliché and might think cloche was pronounced in a similar way.

I didn't know that was what they were called, but I knew cloche was French for bell. It's not exactly an obscure word. Something bell-shaped a hotel might want which was 10" diameter and made of stainless steel narrowed the field down a bit.
