We are having a new line put in next week but there is no line to our home and i have looked around and there is no line from a telephone pole to our home or to any other homes near us.

So do BT have lines underground? if not then they will have to put up new cable from pole to our place which is a good 100 feet away.

A significant part of the BT network is underground.

If there are no visible lines from a pole into any of the houses nearby then (assuming at least one of them has a phone) they will be coming in underground.

Where I live all cables are underground too rather than overhead.

Yes, most of them.

If it is cost that is worrying you. You will be charged flat fee regardless of the amount of work involved.

No not the cost as getting it done free from Sky as getting the line from them.

Unlike most of my village, the phonelines in our street are underground, and I love it! Means a much shorter distance to the exchange and means I get a full 8Mb download speed.

Its hard to follow your reasoning. Underground cabling tends to follow roads and so can take some long tortuous routes whereas poled lines can go cross country. (Although they tend to mostly follow roads as well.)

Having said that underground cabling is less susceptible to EMI than poled. (For example, poled cables can act as HF antennae.)
