htc Desire S.

I thought it was the perfect size, good build, wasn't glossy, spec'd to more than meet my needs and already had Gingerbread. I liked the call quality on the previous HTC I had too...

For me I needed to move beyond symbian - email and good browsing were my priorities. I genuinely considered all platforms except blackberry which I thought didn't have a good enough browsing experience. For a long time I was torn between iPhone4 (purely because everyone else said it was good even though I didn't enjoy it when I tried it), Android phones like the Google Nexus S and others.

Tech-side:
Eventually, what drew me was the UI philosophy, Zune across three screens, xbox live gaming and Office. All reviews I'd read also said fragmentation of Android would be avoided, was slick with high-powered phones, browsing speed was at least competitive with the rest if not better on video comparisons, software keyboard was excellent and I like the portrait qwerty slider on the dell venue pro.

Price-side:
Of course, cost mattered a great deal to me too. I was keen to go payg - fed up of contracts and at that point only Giffgaff had true unlimited data and good deals for voice minutes too. Range of phones at a decent price on payg was limited. Ultimately, getting the HTC HD7 for £390 from O2 combined with a £10pm cost on giffgaff meant I had no contract and enough mins etc for me at a total cost over two years of £630. It was the cheapest option at the time, nothing else came close.

iPhone 3GS

Never had a smartphone before and had seen demos from friend's iPhone. Took the plunge and 12 months later I am as satisfied with it as I was when I first had it. I don't get frustrated by it, it does exactly what I want it to do. My wife saw what the iPhone could do compared to her Nokia W91 and when her contract expired got an iPhone 4, and now she loves it too. Just simple to use and never had any problems.

HTC Desire HD.

My previous phone was a Nokia, but their O/S is dying, and before that an SE, who are already dead to me. I avoid Apple for political reasons, and wouldn't touch Windows on a phone. Hence Android. I wanted a high-end smart phone with a radio, SD slot and a few other features that got me a short-list. Initially I wanted a physical keyboard, but when I tried the Desire Z in a shop it seemed too heavy and dense. I picked the HD because the engineering seemed more elegant, and I hoped the larger screen would make up for not having a keyboard.

iPhone 4. I didn't really want it but then I had a vision with Steve jobs telling me that I had to buy it or risk a certain death, so after the vision I rushed into town and bought it, I haven't died yet so seems it was a good buy.

I'm a programmer.

So you're offering me a computer ten times as powerful as any computer I had owned before 2000, at a ridiculously low price, and you're bundling in all kinds of cool stuff. And the operating system is open source. Plus, it fits in my pocket.

I'm from the 1960s so of course I ask the obvious questions like "Why doesn't it understand me when I talk to it?" and "Where is my fllying car?"

But seriously, this is a good computer. Er telephone, whatever that means.

and wouldn't touch Windows on a phone.
You do know its not the same as what you have on your desktop or what was on phones a couple of years ago?
You're on these boards a fair bit so you must be at least aware it's new.

There's plenty of reasons not to go for it, but I would have hoped you at least touched a demo phone in a shop or read a review before thinking eww windows.

Kinda vague reason tbh, why not the 3GS for example?

I think I'll answer it by saying you probably wanted the latest iteration but what was your previous experience of iPhones to buy into the brand?

lol, the Orange branding on the case would annoy me, I'd happily have one branded as a ZTE Blade though.

That was so last year

The White iPhone is out if you want to stay remotely trendy. Otherwise you should book yourself into the Apple store for an immediate makeover

Desire HD, Basically sick of apple and Blackberry and the screen is massive. Next one will probably be the Dell streak unless something else comes out with a 5inch screen!!

HTC Willdfire. i just wanted to see what this Smart phone was about and if it was worth all the fuss. the wildfire is cheap and it works.

Is it worth the fuss? being able to access email and facebook is useful and being able to get the news, but that is about it.

Will I get another smart phone? I will keep this phone for as long as it keeps going and downgrade my contract after the 2 years
