N8

I'm happy with the functionality of Symbian, and having seen the reviews on the camera, that was the deciding factor.

I've used iOS and Android, and totally failed to see what all the fuss was about them - they're okay, but not obviously better than Symbian.

And the camera on the N8 really is head and shoulders above the rest, and having put Opera 10 on it, the browsing experience is pretty much equal to what I remember experiencing on iOS and Android.

Sadly Symbian is at the end of it's life, if it ever had one. I remember a couple of years ago a mate of mine chucked his symbian phone across the room as he got so frustrated with it. I never known him get frustrated with any tech before.

i got a nice camera to take photos, sure if I see something and I don't have my camera on me the one on the phone is useful. Mine takes ok pictures.

HTC Desire (HD)

I had never had a smartphone, so when deciding which one to get, it was either an iphone or the hero. My brother had an iphone, and a friend had the HTC hero and a work colleague had the Desire. I was wary of apple, from what I had read about its other hardware (ipods, macs). I didnt want to be constrained in how I used the phone. The fact that you can not simply change the battery just seemed so stupid to me. So decided to purchase the Hero.

Just before I was about to purchased it a work colleague also bought one, a few months earlier, but was now regretting it, as he wanted a Desire. So just to 'beat' him I bought the Desire. Luckily Vodafone then changed their data policy, and I was able to get out of the contract.

When the Desire HD came out, I just wanted it...so purchased it. Cant say I am disappointed. The SG2 is very tempting, looks like an excellent phone.

htc Desire S.

I thought it was the perfect size, good build, wasn't glossy, spec'd to more than meet my needs and already had Gingerbread. I liked the call quality on the previous HTC I had too...
HTC TYTN 2 It was a gift and its lasted almost three years and i use it every day to browse the internet and do allsorts with so its turned out to be the best phone ever. The only thing i miss about my nokia is the TV OUT function i eve tried to give my HTC TV OUT compatability using a SPECTEC TV OUT SD CARD which is an adaptor for any phne that clips into the SD card port and connects to a TV via AV. But my HTC has a tint rubber door over the SD slot the door gets in the way so adaptor wont lock i could cut the rubber door off but it seems like a shame.
Iv dropped my phone on concrete, face down, iv dropped it in water

Iv dropped my phone on concrete, face down, iv dropped it in water and snow and theres not a thing wrong with it the only damage is some wear and tear on the batery cover and a tiny chip in the pintwork on the front on the front which is so small you can barely see it so for me this phone is perfect it does everything and can take a few knocks and drops.

Wil be a sad day when it needs replaced.

lol, the Orange branding on the case would annoy me, I'd happily have one branded as a ZTE Blade though.
It has a tiny Orange logo on the rear case, 8mm square. I'm told that on e-bay you can buy small Android stickers that would cover it.

The words "San Francisco" above the screen could be covered by black masking tape. They appear to be underneath the perspex cover of the screen.

Personally I don't care about the branding at all. I don't brandish it as a fashion accessory. I''m impressed by how little I got away with paying for a serious techie toy.

Blackberry Bold 9700 .
It does everything I needed in terms of spec* I didn't want an iphone as I don't like Apple products and their price seemed excessive. HTC were unknown to me and no one was making any noise about them.

* apart from picking up alien space craft, I think newer modesl will be able to do that.

I have a Blackberry Torch as my work phone. I was asked which BB model I wanted so I chose the newest one. It's a fantastic phone with an excellent battery life.

I also have a HTC Widlfire as my personal phone. I just wanted a basic smartphone for evenings and weekends on a cheap sub-£20 a month contract. It does everything I need and is excellent value for money. It's just a shame the battery life is terrible.

I don't think I've ever been frustrated with any Symbian phone, from the SX1 through to the N8. Thing is that the camera on the N8 is probably better than that in most dedicated cameras, and its definitely replaced my Panasonic FT1 for day to day snaps.

And the N8 is one of about 3 phones that can take decent pictures at night, in low light situations/nightclubs, etc.

You're just baiting when saying "if it ever had one" - it is still by far and away the most succesful smartphone platform by a huge margin - its going to take years for Android to being to equal the installed base of Symbian phones.

The SanFran was an interesting one - I put on one of the Modaco roms which made a massive difference, but I doubt I could ever have described it as a serious techie toy.

Apart from the browser, Android left me feeling a little confused. It was okay, but nothing about it jumped out as a reason for all the hype.

Its way ahead of the wildfire; if the camera hadn't been completely useless I would have probably kept it.

The Modaco community are absolutely awesome, some truly stellar work by those guys.

I've still got my special edition McLaren SX1 with Kimi and Coulthard screensavers!

I know what you mean about Nokia cameras. I had an N82 and some of the concert photos on my Flickr were taken with it, but I think you're overstating things a little to say it's better than most dedicated cameras. Cheaper low-end models maybe, but decent quality compacts and DSLRs will always be better than a phone camera, no matter how good it is.

X10 Mini Pro

I wanted the functionality of a smart phone in a small packet, and having seen the screen decided with no stylus and my fat fingers the keyboard made a lot of sense.

Like it, but not convinced It's much better for me than a C905.

Kinda vague reason tbh, why not the 3GS for example?

I think I'll answer it by saying you probably wanted the latest iteration but what was your previous experience of iPhones to buy into the brand?
I was just saying it to be sarcastic
As in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg

I had a 3GS but switched networks so got an iPhone 4 as I got a great trade in price for the 3GS. Reason I went to an iPhone 4? Because I'd spent loads on iTunes and the App Store to just chuck it all away. And the UI is neat

HTC Wildfire S

Does everything I need/want it to do and it does it well. Battery life could be better but I'm used to charging once a day anyway.

HTC HD2.

Due to the huge 4.3 inch screen and ability to load many different android ROMs on to it and get rid of the terrible windows mobile

"I want the one with the bigger geebees." that's quite a funny dialogue.

The SX1 was awesome, although a bit too ... unique?

gsmarena did a blind test, and the public voted for which of the three unnamed cameras was best. The N8 romped ahead, and that was against a mid-range Sony (using a backlit sensor iirc).

The majority of compacts have acceptable lenses, but are normally using tiny sensors - the N8 sensor is apparently bigger than that in most dedicated compact cameras.

I've got a DSLR, a mid-range compact (Panasonic FT1) and the N8. I'll never even try to compare the N8 to the SLR, but it well and truly beats the Panasonic on both still image and video quality.

It won't be up to the level of bridge cameras, or the more expensive compacts, but then thats not surprising. But it really is a *very* good compact camera.

Thats all that anyone could ask of a device - if it does what you want, then its perfect for the job.

hTc Desire

I'd had every version of the SPV, and then the hTc Touch Diamond (all Windows Mobile), and my brother who is an uber geek told me to back away from Windows, saying Android was the way to go. I listened to him. Never again. It's a gorgeous handset, as was the Touch Diamond, but it hates me. I backed up all my $hit last night, it's going on eBay in a few days and I am going to get an iPhone. He has now threatened to withdraw all technical support!

Whats wrong with it?

Most colleagues seem to be happy with their Desires/HDs, only one has moved to the iPhone, and that was really only for the keyboard.

I've no idea. It deletes stuff I'm not trying/don't want to delete, the internet connection is woeful at best, signal is rubbish, I could go on...everyone else I know who has one loves it. I think I've just been unlucky with tbh. I'll try an iPhone until my contract is up, and if I don't like that I'm going back to Windows Mobile.
