Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
JohnnyForget
19-05-2011
I've noticed the Fleetwood Mac Appreciation thread has been getting quite a few posts recently, but predictably almost all the appreciation is of the Rumours era incarnation of the band, which is fair enough, they were and still are very popular.

However, whenever I think of Fleetwood Mac I think of a line-up consisting of Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, the a band who from 1968 to 1970 made some incredible music that for me is a million times more preferable than Rumours, Tusk and all that other AOR stuff.

Someone said on the other thread that the above mentioned two incarnations of Fleetwood Mac are to all intents and purposes different bands. I think that's probably true, which is why they probably need different threads, so feel free to comment on the magnificent Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac on this thread.

Quite agree.

The original Blues group is superb.

Green and Spencer (in particular) on guitar - you don't get better.

I'm a fan of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, how can anyone not love "Man Of The World", "Need Your Love So Bad", "Green Manalishi" and the beautiful "Albatross"? I was never a fan of Rumours etc from what I think came from a completely different band with the same name.

add me to this list, their blues/green era was imho far superior to that slushy aor material

I definitely prefer the early line-up. Fantastic band.

When Peter Green (who had already got himself a glowing reputation as a guitarist with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) formed the band in 1967, he named it Fleetwood Mac in honour of his drummer and bassist. However, their first album was released by the record company using the bandname Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, much to the annoyance of Green, a modest man who didn't want to be singled out as the leader of the band, and who insisted that all subsequent recordings were released using the band's actual name, i.e. Fleetwood Mac.

It is perhaps then very ironic that this incarnation of the band have now been "retrospectively renamed" as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac so that they are not confused with the later incarnation.

Yes, I totally agree. I found this not so long ago. Well worth a listen to. It is a studio version of Need Your Love

I was privileged to see Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969 on the same bill as B B King. Wonderful concert.

That actually happened long before Fleetwood Mac reinvented itself as a rock band. They were originally known as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, but he felt that too much of the limelight would be focused on him, so they dropped his name out of the band title by the third album, when Danny Kirwin joined as second lead guitarist.

Man Of The World is one of the greatest songs ever IMO, could listen to it 24/7. Real shame about what happened to Peter in later life but would love to go see him if he ever decides to tour again. Also a big fan of the Buckingham/Nicks era and loved Rumors cant wait for the possible reunion next year!

I read Mick Fleetwood's biography a few weeks ago, and I've been intrigued about Danny Kirwan ever since. Then Play On is a fantastic album.

I didn't think it was ever Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac as I thought the band leader was always one of the others.

It was always Peter's band but he called it Fleetwood Mac so as give the journeymen back line a legacy to continue working with once he left for pastures anew as he had the foresight to realise was inevitable for such a talent as himself. The actual manner of his leaving was perhaps not what he envisaged.

To be fair Lindsey Buckingham is no mean guitarist himself. I read a while ago that Buckingham/Nicks were recruited primarily because they wanted Buckingham in the band due to his superb playing and Nicks had to come too because Buckingham wouldn't join without her (they were a duo at the time and in a relationship). Little did they know at the time that Nicks would become the superstar...

I agree with you. I listen to them almost daily and never tire of their music, I also play them frequently on an Internet radio show I host.

Have you heard Peter Green's Splinter Group and Peter Green and Friends? I suppose he might tour with one of those bands again.

It wasn't It was the press who called them that. Peter Green hated being seen as the leader of the band. Peter formed the group though Mick Fleetwood became the "Leader" so to speak.

I'm with you OP. Similarly, I always refer to Gabriel's Genesis.

For anyone who hasn't heard...

There is a superb Fleetwood Mac tribute band, endorsed by Mick Fleetwood, who do both eras of the band justice. We've seen them four times, and are looking forward to a fifth next month!
