I bought a DVR/VCR yesterday and I tuned into Sky on channel AV2 after much trial and error but the DVR/VCR keeps switching itself off and I don't see anything but a black screen on AVI.Also,I video taped a little from Sky One to check the picture and the picture was very poor.what am I missing? Can anyone offer quick advice on how to rectify this problem?

Videotaping anything will give a crap picture - that's why videotape is history. What is the quality like if you record to DVD at highest quality - it should be comparable with what the picture looks like viewed through the Toshiba.

AliU2maniac, if you can find a link to your model's user manual on the Toshiba web site then we might be able to give a bit more help.

The DVDR/VCR is going back, maybe even with a blank cassette in the video tray as the remote and the manual button wouldn't eject the tape after repeated tries!

I visited my local Comet today and explained how I had the DVR/VCR set up and the technician on hand told me that I'd installed it correctly, daisy-chaining the devices.I've installed similar equipment before but this Toshiba model didn't do anything it was supposed to.I was very disappointed.

I went back home, got out my LG VCR again, connected my Sky box & TV, tuned in Sky and taped an hour of TV without any distortions in picture or sound. I haven't a clue why I had the problem in the first place but I'm happy that I have a recordable picture again.I get a fantastic picture on my VCR and as I don't get a lot of time to watch TV it serves its purpose.

Do you have a Sky subscription? If so then why don't you have Sky+?

If you don't then then can you get Freeview? If so then a Freeview PVR would be a much better bet than messing about with DVDRs and VCRs.

If neither of the above options are possible then a Freesat PVR would cost twice what you were paying for the VCR but would be much better. Obviously it all comes down to price in the end but you should consider all your alternatives.
