Hey folks, I'm very late getting into comics, I grew up watching cartoons like X-Men, he-Man, TMNT etc and have always loved marvel's characters (Although I despise Spidey & Cap).

I have a large selection of Superhero movies and have finally taken the plunge to start reading comics.
I'm a huge X-Men fan but I'm the kinda guy who like to start at the beginning (and the XMen back catalogue is extensive to say the least).

My favourite movie of all time is Kick Ass and as such I'm reading those comics (and loving them)

I would like to get some suggestions as to what I should read next.

You haven't seen who wrote it or drew it. Don't dismiss things. This was the seventies not the crap the BBC churn out these days.

Depends what you mean by the beginning. You could go back and read the original X-Men series from the 1960s onwards. They are all available in collected hardbacks and cheaper from Amazon than the high street shops. Same with all the other Marvel and DC characters.

The X-Men you are familiar with started with Giant Size X-Men #1; again the early issues are readily available as collections.

Marvel have just done some ".1" issues of the main characters to introduce new readers. Forbidden Planet will probably still have the back issues. DC have just started the "Flashpoint" event which is another reboot of their universe. Could be a good place to start.

I dropped into the X-men in the middle and it didn't really affect my enjoyment of it, but you might want to hunt down some of the X-men classics.

The Phoenix Saga is a must read if you're an X-Men fan.

This was my favourite as a kid.

I've just received the above from Amazon.

A must read for any X-Men fan. It is the original X-men (Beast, Angel etc,) starting from issue 32 and continuing to the last issue.

It covers the rather mediocre stories in the 30s-40s, the rather strange- style Arnold Drake scripted issues and the classic Thomas/Adams issues. Also includes Barry Smith's first ever comic-art but you wouldn't recognize it.

The most amazing thing is turning the page from the end of issue 49 to the splash page of issue 50. From decent but workmanlike art from Heck to Steranko in all his psychedelic glory. This (and Adams later) was a turning point in the maturing of mainstream comic art.

I'd say go with the Ultimate Marvel Universe it's so awesome plus not so old that you'd have a hard time catching up.

I only really tend to read big story lines now so I just check Wikipedia and choose what looks interesting like World War Hulk, Civil War, House Of M and then find what comics I need to read.

I would second the Ultimate Marvel stuff. Just finished Ultimate Spiderman, and it was great. Ultimate X-Men next.

Also Walking Dead. Likely for me, the best comic ever written.

Forget Marvel and come join the dark side with some DC stuff

Batman - 'Hush' storyline (got some great Jim Lee artwork)

I'd also recommend '52' (DCs year long weekly comic from a few years back, thats a good 4 volumes if you can pick it up cheaply off Ebay). That gives you entry onto a wide range of 'lesser' dc characters without any big three (Batman Superman and Wonder Woman) interference.

Or totally off the wall. Try Image comics Battle Pope.

Or final option, wait till September and take advantage of DC's reboot of all its titles. All starting at number one again..
