TV Set Up

I have a HD TV with 4HDMI ports on it. So far one is used by the PS3. I plan on buying a Freeview HD box, thus using another of the ports. I was wondering if it is possible to get a surround sound system so that both the PS3 and the Freeview box both use the sound system. Is it just as simple as plugging in all 3 devices to the TV?

Here is a link to the TV I have:

I'm not familiar with a lot of the connections and devices other than the ones I have listed here, so if you could write the responses as simply as possible please!

To get proper surround sound you need an amplifier with enough digital inputs for each source you want to listen to.

There is two ways to deliver digital surround sound to a suitable amplifier.

HDMI some amplifiers have multiple hdmi inputs and an output for the TV. You connect all your sources by hdmi to the amplifier and using the amplifier controls select the one you want to watch and listen too using the AV amplifier remote control. Video is delivered to the TV by using a single hdmi cable from the amp.

Cheaper kit often does not have hdmi inputs, these are supplied with the audio using a digital connection called s/pdif (Sony/Phillips Digital Interface).

s/pdif can be an optical fibre (known as toslink) or a standard coaxial rca phono cable.

Using this system you connect each item of kit to the TV by hdmi and to the amplifier by s/pdif. You simply mute the TV to use the amp.

Cheap all in one units at best generally only have one s/pdif input, to use these you have to provide an additional selector switch (manual unless you pay lots of money) to connect the appropriate kit to the amplifier.

If you have a Richer Sounds locally pop in there, they will explain the options and costs.
