Born January 16 1979, Aaliyah Haughton was destined for stardom. After many attempts at starting a career, she was signed to Jive Records in 1991. Her debut album, 'Age Ain't Nothing But A Number', was released in 1994, followed by albums 'One In A Million', released in 1996, and '/\/\LIY/\H', her final album in 2001, before a plane crash on August 25 2001 that tragically cut her life short.

This is an appreciation thread to mark and celebrate the life of a true R&B princess. Please do not post any negative or disrespectful comments.

Aaliyah was amazing - when her debut album came out I remember we were crazy about hits like Back and Forth and her whole cool vibe for someone so young.

My personal favourite always has been "(At Your Best) You Are Love" - she had an amazing voice and aura about her and it's really sad she died so young.

Love(d) her. Still listen to some of her music. I particularly like 'Age aint nothing but a number', 'More than a woman' and of course the infamous 'Rock the boat' - which she was filming the video for when her plane crashed
Hard to believe it's almost 10 years

Rest in Peace Aaliyah, one of God's Angels.

I hope there is a 10 year tribute to her on music channels on the 25th!

Aaliyah was one of the first artists i was like WOAH! infatuated with in the early 00s (i think actually the year she died) and it was like as soon as i knew about her she died....was very sad actually!

I still only have her third album to date. But want to have her first two soon she was and is a very talented lady and she would have had a fantastic career ahead of her! as in Britney scale massive commecial success and Iconography! and also her videos were VERY Janet! Love them.

to the Princess of R&B!!

I love this woman so I couldn't believe that she died in the most horrific circumstances. Her music though will always live on. RIP.

Great idea for a thread. I can't believe it's been 10 years since she died Her music was real R&B more than the likes of Rihanna (which I regard as pop even though I like her). I bet she'd still be successful if she was around now. Favourite singles were We Need A Resolution, More Than A Woman, Try Again and Rock the Boat. Were her albums good?

RIP Aaliyah

I would like to second that. I have said on other threads that she was a brilliant artist who had the potential to be at the forefront of r and b music for many years to come. Her music had a serenity and class about it. It was very polished and accomplished sound that she achieved. From the early single 'Back and Forth' there was maturity and class about her voice. 'One in a Million ' 'Hot Like Fire' and 'Got to give it Up' were excellent singles and exemplified that Aaliyah was only getting better. Her self titled album Aaliyah reinforced her strength as artist and 'Rock the Boat' again showed that excellent smooth sound that she possessed. It is extremely sad that she has gone for her family, friends and fans and may she rest in peace. May her music and work continue to be celebrated.

'4 Page Letter' anyone? There were too many good songs to choose a favourite from. It's still a shock that she's gone, a great loss of talent to the world and my favourite music genre.

Timbaland and Missy who wrote the lyrics and produced most of the tracks on her last two albums are still alive and making music today.

Wow 10 years!

It is still one of the best in the R&B genre to this date! I feel the sounds were very ahead of its time when released you know!

And the videos, very surreal and seductive she was!

I miss her so much..DAMN.I wish we got another album from her to see a little bit of more progression...But it's so impressive that she has such a respectable legacy with just 3 albums.Who else can do that in this era of music??Only her

Btw, I've asked this question before but I'm going to ask again. If Aaliyah hadn't died, would she end up like Usher (peak after 4 albums, then fall off and then sell out to make a comeback) or would she be as consistent, successful and acclaimed as MJ, Madonna, Janet etc.??

I know it's all hypothetical and mere assumptions, but I would really like to hear some opinions, since I've never been able to answer this question myself

That's a good question, I think she would have ended up like Pink e.g. stay in the public psyche with a peak every now and again. Aaliyah had a rare classiness about her, so she wouldn't have needed to strip or anything.

It's hard to think. I'd like to see her make an appearance on Dancing with the Stars like her best friend Brandy did, but maybe she'd still be bigger. Even so, I think she'd still be making R&B albums either way, perhaps with a reality show, married (perhaps to Damon Dash) and with a child or two.
