DVD 5.1 Sound Question

I have just got hold of a Sony 5.1 system that is driven by a Sony TA-VE170 AV Amp.

What DVD player would i have to use with it to make it work in full 5.1

Is there a specific series or model or Sony DVD player i have to use?

Any modern DVD will have surround sound available on a digital audio output. Just a matter of working out how much you want to spend really.

I think that the Sony TA-VE170 AV Amp only has (according to the manual) 3*2 channel and 1*6 channel input. If this is the case to get 5.1 sound you will need a DVD player with on board decoding and three pairs of phone leads.

It has an input for 5.1CH DVD and it has rear, front, center and sub connections on the back (for this input)

Knowndeserter is correct. Your Sony doesn't have a digital input, so you'll need to connect your DVD player via the 6 analogue inputs on the rear left of the Sony (from the viewers point of view) - see his link to the manual,

So you need to be careful about what you pick as a DVD player, as not all of them have the necessary 6 (5.1) analogue outputs.

If you got something like the Cambridge Audio DVD99 [click] you'll be able to play DVDs, CDs, SACDs and DVD-Audio disks too (which are much higher quality than standard CDs). They're less than £100 as well, a true high quality hi-fi bargain from Richer Sounds (if there's any left, of course).

Alternatively you could buy a blu-ray player. The Sony will sound even better, and Cambridge Audio do a couple of Blu-Ray players that also cover all the high-res audio bases.
