If BBC broadbasts in 1080p will Foxsat HDR show 1080p icon

We'd pretty much given up waiting for broadcast 1080p, since other than some video on-demand services you'll generally need to stick to Blu-ray to tick that box, but around the end of March BBC HD changed all that. It's taking advantage of a part of the Freeview HD spec that allows the broadcaster to dynamically select between 1080p / 25fps and 1080i / 25fps transmission and the boxes are mandated to be able to output 1080p / 50fps. The reasoning for the decision is to provide better picture quality on material that was shot that way, unfortunately it's coming to light now because some HDTVs are having trouble handling the switch and causing an audio dropout when the format shifts, as mentioned by UK buyers guide What Hi-Fi. As if Sony didn't have enough to deal with, the overwhelming majority of complaints appear to center around its TVs and the company has promised more information in the next 7 - 10 days about a fix that will take care of the problem.
Sorry if its been raised already, cannot find mention of it.I think the chip in the foxsat can handle 1080p but want to know if the icon in menubar will display 1080p if broadcasts happen in 1080p. Reports on the blog GrahamlThompson posted seem to report that the icon remains at 1080i at all times. |

The 1080p25 testing is exclusive to Freeview-HD. Presumably they can't do the same on Freesat because the transmissions are shared with Sky and generic fta box users.
Freeview-HD needs new boxes presumably that are designed to handle the progressive format. |

An old post on the subject... http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...31&postcount=3 Quote:
Please note, the product potentially supports 1080p25 not 1080p50, also a broadcaster would have to be able to broadcast in the format for the device to handle it. Automan.

I wonder what Sky boxes would do. Some people are assuming they won't work, hence it won't be used on Freesat. But the H.264 decoding part of the silicon is the same across most products, and some people claim Sky are already broadcasting 1080p25 (though how on earth could anyone confirm this? grey market Sky cam + TS analyser? Don't think that's been done).
There's slightly less point to doing it on DSat (because there aren't any boxes that output 1080p yet, are there?), but it can't hurt - unless some common boxes have the same bug as Sony TVs when the switch occurs! Cheers, David. |

Well I de-interlaced a 1440 x 1080i sample from my camcorder to 1080p25. Converted using AV2HDR and replayed from USB. The 1080p indicator does not light it remains at 1080i.
