i don't remember anyone discussing the merits of bands/artists based on their sales figures when i was younger, or even having the faintest idea what they were...they were either good or they were shit

just cos we live in an age where artists get dropped if their sales fall 1%, doesn't mean we also shouldn't forget that the masses often get it wrong

sales are not always a measure of quality tho they are sometimes

When we were younger we didnt have the internet with all the sales figures and thousands of other music fans/haters to discuss it with. Times have changed and we need to accept it. True sales are not a measure of quality, but who is to say what is quality and what isnt? You buy what you like. I am sure a lot of what I have bought over the years would be considered by some to be rubbish. I dont care.

To OP:

Because its now the music BUSINESS. (As the Pet Shop Boys phrased it).

In today's climate Radiohead would have been dropped after their debut album Pablo Honey flopped. Ditto U2 who did not catch on until their 3rd album War; and the likes of David Bowie; Rod Stewart; Elton John; Genesis; REM; etc would have not have been allowed to release several albums/singles before breaking through.

A lot of people on here seem to use sales figures a willy waving type thing. It's a bit sad.

There is an appreciation thread for a certain artist here on this forum where albums sales are the sole discussion point.
Anyone want 3 guesses who it is.

But it's true, you always have to bring that artist into every conversation.

People would respect you more if you just put it a side for a few posts.

Untill the next thread starts.

Anyway, I have not heard this saying for a very long time

"sling your hook"

Had a laugh at that.

And that was worthy of a topic even though it was a month too late.
But that thread didn't get to thousands of posts about albums sales, only a couple of pages and most of that was the usual jealous haters posting
The facts were mentioned and that was that
But thanks for bringing that thread back to my attention, need to update it with the latest figures released by big machine the other day.

Its a sign of the times, i mean football fans now talk about the clubs finances and all that when years ago you just talked about what happened on the pitch.

Same here i can't be bothered with the Prem anymore, it was a lot more enjoyable in the 70's and 80's as i remember just like the music funnily enough.

Yeah as a young girl going to st james park it was magical, it dont have that appeal anymore, and thats got nothing to do with the fact I am older now either.

And of course the late 70's, 80's were fantastic for music, you never heard about album sales at all, I cant rememeber anyone even talking about sales. It was just about the music, thats all, putting that black bit of vinyl on your record player.
Once CD's come out it like changed everything, IMO.

The only reason the thread YOU STARTED about Taylor's TWENTY MILLION ALBUM SALES didn't get to 000s of posts is because, basically, so few people actually give a cr*p about her in the UK. My link was just basically highlighting your total and utter hypocrisy. As per usual.

PS I notice no comment from you on this thread YOU STARTED ON ADELE's SALES IN THE US so here it is again:

Nothing wrong with Noel Gallagher, one of the best UK song writers of many era. Like oasis or not, no one can really argue NG was not a great songwriter.

It's always been about sales. That's what the chart is for. However, the figures are just more accessible now.

Music - pop music anyway - has always been about money, too. However these days it's very obvious that money is the primary factor. Bands aren't allowed to progress and be "small" to start with like they were in the past. The labels simply drop them without development.
