There were plans for a Carry On film in Australia (perhaps called Carry On Down Under) and for a film about space (possibly titled Carry on Spacemen). Carry On London reached pre-production but a report on Wikipedia says that it is unlikely to be made following the sad passing of The Late Peter Rogers in April 2009.

As mllfap mentioned a little earlier in this thread, Carry On Cabby - one the earliest Carry On films - is to be shown on Film 4 on 1.6.2011.

Carry On Cabby is among my favourite Carry On films.

It was a great film which was shown in the Spring on Film 4 – the first time it has been on UK terrestrial television for many years.

Who could forget the great performances in it of Kenneth Williams, Barbara Windsor, Bernard Cribbins and Charles Hawtrey?

Do you remember Judith Furse as Dr. Crow in Carry On Spying, dolly12345? Judith was also in Carry On Cabby.

Try to see Carry On Cowboy on the ITV 1 HD channel this Saturday afternoon (28.5.2011) from 1.25 pm, if you can.

They are both excellent, Terry Wigon. I am glad that you have mentioned them.

Who could forget Els Bels in Carry On Abroad?

Everyone I talk to about Carry On At Your Convenience recalls the budgie Hattie was chatting to.

Yes Terry. Sid hadn't been approached for .."England" as he was touring "The Mating Season" at the time. He collapsed and died on stage during his performance in Sunderland on April 26th 1976 at the age of 62. Filming of .."England" began on May 3rd. It must have been a sad time for the cast at that point!

I am glad you mention Frankie. I am pleased that was in two Carry On films (Carry On Doctor and Carry On Up The Jungle). He was perfect for the parts he played in them and he also appeared with Hattie and Charles in one of the excellent Carry On Christmas specials made for television.

You put it so well, ojs - the Carry On films are part of our heritage. Imagine a Bank Holiday weekend in which no Carry On films are shown on television .

This coming Bank Holiday weekend, Carry On Cowboy is being broadcast on Saturday (28.5.2011) from 1.25 pm to 3.10 pm on ITV 1 and on ITV 1 HD (please check television guides to confirm times).

Where can one get the DVD discs with the above-named documentary on them, mllfap?

It's amazing to thing that Frankie was only in 2 of the Carry On films..He made such an impression and you always think he was in more of them. Such a funny comedy actor!

I am sorry, mllfap, that I did not see your posting in which you suggested that this Carry On Appreciation thread be started. It was a very good idea of yours mllfap. One obviously supported by so many posters to this thread including Radiomaniac who suggested it after you had already done so. The forum moderator also mentioned in the Carry On Screaming thread that I might consider doing as you suggested and open this thread.

mllfap wrote: Carry On Cabby was always my fave and while it was being made it was not supposed to be a Carry On - it was going to be Call Me A Cab
Carry On Cabby sounds much better.

An article on Wikipedia says that the film was made at Pinewood and Windsor. I shall think of the film the next time Windsor is mentioned.

Another interesting fact from Wikipedia: Carry On Cruising (1962) was the first colour Carry On Film (made in technicolour). Carry On Cabby then followed (in 1962) in black-and-white with Carry On Jack in colour (in 1963). In 1964 the next Carry On film was made in black-and-white - Carry On Spying. But later the same year Carry On Cleo was filmed in colour as were all subsequent Carry On films.

I wonder what Carry On fans would think of Carry On Cleo in black-and-white or Carry On Spying in colour?

Yes - Frankie Howerd was an incredibly funny comedy actor.

I have always regarded Frankie as one of the original Carry On team who appeared in so many Carry On films - but, as you point out, highlander1969, he was only in two of the Carry On series of films. I would have liked to see him in many more of them. Imagine Frankie in Carry On Up The Khyber or Carry On Cleo.

A few years ago BBC 4 showed the comedy series Up Pompeii! in which Frankie starred. I wish they would put it on again. It was hilarious.

So do I. One of Bernard's most prominent parts in the Carry On film series was in Carry On Screaming which was shown last Saturday (21.5.2011) on ITV 1 and on ITV 1 HD. It was the first time I have seen it in HD. It is a marvellous film.

"The Mating Season" play is mentioned in a television documentary about Sid.

Yes it must have been .

A terrible loss for Sid’s family, his friends and for everyone who knew him - and a loss for British film and television comedy and for the whole nation. Sid was incredibly popular - and still is. He was definitely one of the all time greats of British comedy.

Hi TerryTelly! Thanks so much for your response.
I certainly will be visiting regularly, its not often one gets the chance to chat about great british comedy on the forums.

Unfortunately, Its very very rarely that Carry Ons are shown on Irish TV. It may have been shown more often years ago when I was a very small child, but in the last few years Irish TV has gone to the dogs!!! so I am not surprised they won't show the Carry Ons! Thank goodness for the Freeview, so at least I can get all of the British channels.

I will certainly check out Carry On Cowboy this weekend, its one I haven't watched as much as the others.

Carry On England, its really missing something without these two greats. To me it didn't really feel like a proper Carry On.

Thanks for letting me know TerryTelly, I probably didn't have Ch 5 at the time so I never saw them and I never knew they were released on DVDs, I will certainly check out Amazon.

Up Pompeii was shown a few weekends ago (around Easter) on ITV3. ITV3 were showing a few Carry Ons as well as other British movies such as Steptoe and Son and George and Mildred as well as On The Buses.

Hopefully they should show it again, since I missed it that weekend.

Totally agree about Frankie Howerd, he was such a powerful presence indeed.

Could I put in a word for one of the greatest unsung heroes of the Carry Ons?

PATSY ROWLAND

Miss Dempsey (Carry On Loving) 1970
Miss Withering (Carry On At Your Convenience) 1971
Mayors Wife (Carry On Girls) 1973

These three are probably her biggest roles, but she was brilliant - especially Miss Dempsey who turns from the dowdy housekeeper of Percy Snooper into a vamp when Hatgtie threatens her position - pushing in the dinner trolly in a slinky dress, KW's outraged "MISS DEMPSEY!!", then she asks him if he wants his electric blanket on "because we, er I mean, you don't always have it").

If remembered at all now (she died a few years ago at a youngish age of cancer) it will be for the neighbour of Sid & Diana Coupland in the long running ITV comedy "Bless This House", but she had a great talent for comedy, and was I think the equal of Joan Sims (who I also greatly admired). I wish they had given her some leads occassionaly

"You're not Chinese. So vhat?" (Betty) Carry On Regardless

People of a certain age (me included) will remember Betty from the radio shows Beyond Our Ken and especially Round The Horne. In RTH she did a wicked spoof of both Fanny Craddock (as Daphne Whitethigh) and Celia Johnson (as Dame Celia Molestrangler) in a spoof 1940s film each week always clearly modelled on "Brief Encounter", with titles like Brief Ecstacy, The Legend Of the Glass Intermetzo, Present Encounter etc)

I mention this because if you'd like to hear this lovely versatile lady Radio 4 Extra (nee Radio 7) is currently repeating RTH on Mondays at 8 a.m. 12 noon and 7 p.m.

A great start to the week. Next Monday (May 30th) they start the 1967 series

How good was Jim Dale as Dr Nookie & Dr Killmore? Bernard Bresslau wandering up & down the corridors to see his 'bird'

They should screen the carry on hospital films in wards now.

Well he wasn't overly talkative on Khyber so it doesn't bode well for "That's Carry On". I'm looking forward to the commentary on Abroad, I have heard this before, and the four of them are quite entertaining.
