security advice Apple iPad
Anne-Sophie
27-05-2011
I will shortly be going to France and taking an Apple iPad 1 (non-GP version). In France I have a MiFi (Huawei E5832) with an Orange.fr sim card waiting for me to set up.

I understand I will have to set a password for the MiFi device but do I need to set up some internet security on the iPad?

I would like to be able to consult my bank statements while I am there, but obviously only if I can be confident that it is safe to do so.

All advice welcome.

Thanks.

Sorry I meant (non 3G version)

Having a "senior" moment again !!!

Once again , do I need internet security installed on the iPad?

Thanks.

Nope.

Just make sure that:

1) Any WiFi connection you use is encrypted, preferably with WPA2 or at least WPA. I'd assume the MiFi would support WPA at the very least, given the age & crappiness of WEP. This is what the MiFi's password protection is for - securing the WiFi connection. As mentioned, choose WPA2 if you can, or WPA if WPA2 is not an option. For the password, try and use something which is not a dictionary word or phrase, and which contains numbers plus upper & lowercase letters.

2) Your online banking site uses SSL encryption (https prefix). This should be the default for banking though anyway, as it would be rather mad for a bank to let you login via a non-secure page. When browsing a secure site on Safari, it should display a locked padlock above the URL (address) bar, along with the site's name or owner. Also, if the site has "extended validation", the padlock & name above the address bar will be green (e.g. NatWest online banking has extended validation, so visiting https://www.nwolb.com/ gives a green padlock & ID above the address bar).

Was your MiFi purchased in France and with the original SIM?

Thanks Matt D for that advice.

Yes psionic, I have bought the MiFi with a French SIM. It is on the orange.fr network.

I am having it sent directly to the address where I will be staying in France so won't be able to do a trial run before I go.

I just hope it works.
