American Food vs British Food
Everywhere I go, I see American fast food joints, restaurants, etc. If you could ban American food in the UK and bring back everything British, would you?

American fast food is not the whole cuisine of America. If you take in the many regions of that vast country you will find a huge diversity of dishes. Many times more so than the UK.

Of course a lot of the fast food chains although American owned are not American food. Burgers and sandwiches are not American food.

As fish & chips are not British food.
I have never saw a chippy in the same context as ours anywhere in the world. Australia was the closest but it was far to healthy, chips were oven cooked! |

Who invented fish & chips then?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8419026.stm The British have taken them on to another level though. I'm originally from Grimsby and when I go back there the first thing I have is haddock, chips and mushy peas. Absolutely sublime! They just don't taste the same anywhere else IMO. |

I wish there were a few more good quality Mexican fast food restaurants here. NOT Del Taco, or Taco Bell. But, places where you could get a good burritto, or decent taco. Perferably with tortillas hand made on the site. After all, the origins of Mexican food are much more American than anything sold at McDonald's. If it has to be a chain then Baja Freshwould be good. And as far as burger joints go, In and Out Burger Good food made quickly.

http://www.boojummex.com/ But I'd love somewhere that does a wide range of Mexican "fast food", quesadilla, tacos, burritos, the works. |

Have you ever been to Texas? They have really phenomenal Tex-Mex food. Taco Cabana has good cheap food. I really enjoyed eating out over there. It's no wonder so many of them living over there struggle with their weight.

There is no versus. There is good and bad food everywhere. I can apreciate food from all over the world, without dissing one or other country in favour of another.

The article says that the Belgians or French invented chips and fried fish was first done in Europe but the Brits were the first to put them together.

Who first had the bright idea to marry fish with chips remains the subject of fierce controversy and we will probably never know for sure. It is safe to say it was somewhere in England but arguments rage over whether it was up north or down south.
According to the Open University program Ever Wondered About Food? it was the English who first put fish & chips together. Chips were popular in London and fried fish was popular in the North West. I think the program mentioned John Lees but I don't think they could give a definitive awnser either. |

After you've seen a show like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives you realise that we don't really have much in the way of 'American' food in the UK. I'm pretty much planning my first trip to the US based on the Amazing food I've seen that I'm dying to try.
I think if we did have one local decent 24 hour diner I'd probably live in there. |

Plenty of other foods are american: e.g. gumbo and jambalaya. No-one does BBQ the way Americans do, not even the Aussies.
One thing we should not import though are American-sized portions. Imagine if Glasgow's deep-fried Mars Bars had taken off in USA :O |
