Washed out picture with DVD recorder

I have just connected my dvd recorder from my sky box to my tv and the picture is washed out. When not going through the dvd recorder the picture is fantastic. Any clues? Recorder is the Philips 3380/75.

Have you checked they're all using the same 'source standard' i.e. RGB? Sounds like something is sending a non-RGB signal to something which is expecting an RGB signal......

Just had a look and I have pr/pb/y jacks in both tv and recorder - will this effect the picture if I connect them up?

What's happening is that the Sky box is sending a RGB picture to your TV and your DVD recorder is not, and that is why your pictures look "Washed Out". Try and go in to the DVD Recorder's Setup or Settings Menu, look for Picture Settings or Display Settings and see if the output setting displays PAL or CVBS, if it does display these, Change the setting to RGB and store it.
That should make the picture look better.
RGB only works through the Scart Connection Only.

Hi,
I changed the setting from Pal to NTSc but no change. I then connected the red, green blue cable from the dvd to the tv and now can see a better picture (had to change the input or source on my TV) but no sound?? Would this come down to a setting do you think or the cable??

Just to check. Did you connect a cable from three coloured sockets on the DVD to three similarly coloured sockets on the TV? And were these sockets in a group called Component Video and maybe labelled Y Pr and Pb?

If you did then all you have connected is the video. next to these groups of connectors on both the DVD and TV should be a pair of sockets labelled AUDIO with L and R next to the sockets. They are probably coloured red and white or maybe red and black. You need another lead to link these pairs of sockets for the sound.

Just be certain to pick the right Audio sockets on the TV as there may be more than one. The ones to use should be grouped together with the video connections you have made. And do not connect to any sockets labelled AUDIO OUT on the TV.

Oh OK! Thank you I will have to buy some tomorrow.

Do I still need the other red/white/yellow cables connected (think it is now running through a different input or source now by using the Y Pr and Pb isn't it?)

No you only need the audio pair. There may only be one on the DVD which is shared between the Component (Y Pr Pb) and Composite (yellow socket). The TV however will probably have separate Audio In sockets for each form of video format it has.

The main reason for this is to connect several separate devices to the TV at the same time. If you are only using one device then you only need one set of video and audio connections. You don't need to connect every socket on the back of the DVD to every socket on the back of the telly

BTW. If you do have a red/white/yellow cable already then you could just use the red and white and leave the yellow unconnected. Would save buying another cable.
