I Think a new PC is on you're shopping list, as Windows is also giving you hassle
Well i'm still not entirely sure what it is at the moment.

But if i was rich, i'd buy this without hesitation ..

After reading about your problems with Gnome 3 & the Nvidia 7300 LE, I've tried Fedora 15 with the Gnome 3 desktop on my Dell E520 with the Nvidia 7300 LE graphics card.

It runs perfectly fine no freezing or anything, granted the animations aren't that great but it runs.

Ubuntu Unity still freezes when I update the nvidia driver on my nettop though.

Gnome 3 ran fine in Fedora for me with my new ATI card, but the top menu bar was multi-coloured which I wasn't prepared to put up with.

It's interesting that you got it running ok with a 7300LE though - what processor have you got out of interest ?.

As I said also, run perfectly for me with my 6700 & 7300 series also on fully nvidia machines.

Could be the fact i've only got a celeron processor ?

Honestly don't know. If that top menu bar hadn't been glitchy and multi coloured in fedora i'd have happily kept it installed.

Our Eee PC has a Celeron. It's a pretty low spec item sadly, and I can only run lightweight distros on it. I wouldn't even consider Gnome 2, let alone Gnome 3, but it runs great with OpenBox on Crunchbang Linux.

Rather than start a new thread for every version of Linux I thought I'd start a general Linux thread.
...
Please share your thoughts or comments on any distros you've tried or use.
I seldom look in here, so this was a pleasant surprise.

2 homeboxes, both on Ubuntu 10.10, Gnome2 with KDE apps (yakuake and k3b).

My philosophy

See that could be it. My weedy little processor plus the NVidia card could have proven fatal.

Maybe with this ATI card I have now, it'll potentially do more of the donkey work graphics-wise.

Ahh i dunno. I've got a load of blank DVD's lying around and a free (and legal..) copy of a disk image thing, so I might take an image of the PC as it stands and give Fedora another go

I'm actually thinking of building a new super-PC with all modern bits inside it. Now I don't know if its safe to mix Intel chipsets with nVidia graphics cards... and of all the PCs I've put Linux on over the years I've never installed onto one with an ATI graphics card either. Reading Jason's exploits I don't know whether to be worried or just put it down to his bad luck (Sorry Jason, I've been pulling my hair out as much as you with your Linux troubles!).

On a lighter note, have you ever noticed how USB memory sticks act differently on Linux than Windows? I have updated my Linux Reviews And Guides website with a little help on this.

Really? That's brilliant!

Like I say, openSUSE with Gnome 3 has been nothing less than perfect for me. Let us know how you get on with it. What did you do differently this time?

I found out how to get round the glitchy installation screen in suse and installed that. updated and upgraded everything and used the 1-click installer.

But, sadly I spoke too soon. The glitchy menu bar is back. I've tried grabbing a screenie of it but for whatever reason the programs i've used won't include the top menu bar.

It's basically half black, half white, split vertically.

I might have a root around to see if it's fixable in suse, but i'm not going to spend all night on it. again

I think I'm a curse for you Jason. Every time I post up something goes wrong for you!

If only Linux came pre-installed for us eh? Be nice to see openSUSE available on laptops and whatnot, and there'd be much less gnashing of teeth on forums.

Heh! . Don't worry. It was strange how it worked initially though - i'd installed Gnome 3 and rebooted and it came up straight away. That's when I posted here about it.

Turned the PC off and came back to it later on and when it came up, that's when the menu bar had glitched again.

Perhaps i shouldn't have turned it off ?

Oooh, some interesting distro news (as well as those interesting links above this post). Puppy 5.2.8 is out! And also there is a LXDE release of Mint 11, which I hope to try out soon. Its really cool that the Linux world seems to keep moving forward with all these releases!

For anyone wanting to try out Linux but has always been afraid to for any reason, I have updated my blog with a little article on trying out Linux.

Well I'm a very happy Linux user at the moment as I have just found my perfect app which means I can now do even less on a PC GTKPod is an Ipod/Itunes style program which allows you to do everything iTunes can but doesn't require erasing the iPod first if it was used on another computer PLUS you can hook up multiple devices at the same time

Quick to run, takes little memory and the ID3 editor is wonderful

I used to love Floola until the developer stopped working on it for a while due to the iTunes database being changed around.

It was near-perfect for what I needed it for.

Can't remember what I used after that though.

I've just downloaded Ubuntu 11.04. I was going to stay on 10.10 till the next release but I've screwed my package installer - probably when I accidently clicked on the update and then promptly canceled it . I've tried to fix it but it look like I'd best reinstall Ubuntu. Thought I might give 11.04 a go.

It actually bloody works. Gnome 3. On my PC. Working.

Properly

And surviving multiple reboots as well ...

The menu bar is properly jet black, although it appears to have deliberately been given a slightly lighter shade on the top half in an effort to give it a 'gloss' look. It looks ok and works relatively well - everything on the menu bar is perfectly visible.

The ONE potential bit of drama is that the graphics have glitched BADLY on random occasions - to get an idea of what it looks like, imagine the old style tv tuners and how the picture breaks up just as you're turning the tuning knob.

I've enabled the 'anti tearing' mode on the catalyst control centre which seems to have calmed things down, but i'll give it a couple of days to see if it's properly settled down.

Basically I installed Kubuntu 11.04 and googled for "Install gnome 3 ubuntu". I found one website that had a slightly different take on the installation commands - i can't bloody find it again - and ran the installation. Took ages, but finished it and rebooted and there it was.

And it bloody works !

Although i've just tried to use the packagekit and it's graphically ripped up the screen again, but only for a brief flash. It's probably something i could potentially live with as it's not currently affecting the regular desktop.

Wonderful. This was working fine last night, surviving multiple reboots and still coming back with the jet black menu bar.

I turned the machine off last night to go to bed and this morning when i've turned it back on again the menu bar is screwed again - back to the same black and white glitching that I had with Suse and Fedora
