I installed Ubuntu 11.04(64 bit version) on my Imac with the use of Parallels. Still get used to running it. I use Firefox at the moment, mainly for the sync function, as I have bookmarks on my Imac and PC using Firefox. I am going to look into Chrome soon though.
I installed Xchat, so that I can use IRC. Still getting used to the install manager on Ubuntu. I also have to install the Flash Player on it as well. Still getting used to it. I haven't used that many other programs on it yet. GNOME seems okay so far. |

Are you running Gnome 3 then, or have you confused it with Ubuntu's Unity? I know they have Gnome 3 available via a PPA of some sort...
Any of you lot listen to any Linux podcasts? I've just started with the whole podcast thing, and have discovered the Linux Format/Tuxradar one and the Jupiter/Linux Action Show. Both are really good int heir own way. The Linux Action Show recently pasted Fedora in their show, saying that though the people and the technology is sound, the distro just isn't finished for everyday use. They really went to town on it! Any other good ones to look out for? |

I think stripedcat means Unity. Firefox Sync is brilliant, all my PCs are synced and each time I change or add a bookmark it does it to all of them which is so damn good!
I've yet to listen to a Linux podcast KAL_El, but I will check those out. I do enjoy the odd podcast but usually listen to Garnet Lee's gaming podcasts. I'm going to look for some more Linux podcasts if these are any good. What linux related websites do you guys visit? Here are some I enjoy: Distrowatch - A nice site to keep up with the latest updates and releases in the world of Linux. OMGUbuntu - Primarily Ubuntu news and tips, but also has other quality stuff. I really enjoy this site. Linux-Mag.com - Again quality site done by Linux Magazine, some great features. There's a couple smaller sites I visit too, mostly Ubuntu related. Mark

MarkI agree that Firefox Sync is very good. At least it gives a uniqueness to Firefox, which it sort of needs as it faces stiff competition from Chrome and Safari as well. |

Just a quick update, yes it is Unity I have on my Ubuntu installation. I just haven't moved any of the program icons over to the left hand side of the desktop yet(like you see in all the pictures of it).

Great idea for a thread! I don't use Linux but my friend uses Ubuntu as she hates Windows Vista and 7. She gets on well with it and doesn't have too many problems with it AFAIK. I have an Ubuntu disk lying around that I might try sometime. Does it work well on an old PC?

Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha 1 was released yesterday. Unity and Gnome 3 support. I don't recommend downloading this if you are new to Linux, but if you have a spare machine it's worth a look at whats to come!

It should do, one of my PCs is about 8 years old and no problems, even using Ubuntu 11.04. If you're concerned about performance or can't get Ubuntu to work (which it will), then try Mint 11, Mepis 11 or one of the other versions mentioned here.

Sorry for any confusion, I checked my Ubuntu installation, it is the Gnome desktop I am running at the moment on it. It is 2.32 version of it.

There is a lighter-weight version of Ubuntu named Xubuntu available (free download) , should run in 256MB RAM although 512MB would probably be better. However there's nothing wrong with trying a Ubuntu CD if you have one around.

Ahhh, that means then it didn't find a graphics card suitable for Unity. It's not a problem though, as many people prefer the Gnome version. It does exactly the same just looks slightly different!

I was thinking of trying it either on my 7 year old Windows XP laptop (which I'm not using right now) or on a 9 yr old Windows 2000 machine no longer in use. It's Ubuntu 10 I think.

The old computer I would most likely use it on has 256MB RAM and a 40GB hard drive. I got the disk free from a university event
![]() They do have a time limit, but only in so much as old versions aren't supported after several years due to new ones being released. Scroll down http://distrowatch.com/ and on the right is a list of common ones for you to try. |

This is a good read for anyone looking at Linux
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/kdegnome Although the Gnome write up is slightly out of date

Okay. I have heard that 'Unity' has gotten a bit of negative press.
Luckily the Gnome 3 Live CD worked perfectly on my system, and after installing openSUSE with Gnome 3 I realised it was the one for me. Gnome 3 is less fussy and in your face than Unity imho, but they are both excellent and will go onto be even better in the future. |

Unity is damn good, makes tasks much quicker and is very intuitive to use. Same can be said for Gnome 3, yes it's different, but I'm quite enjoying Fedora 15 on my test PC. It is early days yet though for both Unity and Gnome 3, and already the daily builds are showing some great promice for both of them. Mark

Ok, i'm a software dev that knows what unity is in terms of builds etc, but what i dont understand is how or why there is an entirely separate product/linux distros that come out from it. The actual code isn't any different, just how the dependencies etc are handled.
Or is it just that a different group of people are working on "unity" builds because of the shorter compile time? So you end up with a different product/distro? |

I like Linux better than Windows. I am actually building a Linux distro, you could give me suggestions.
Unity is a project of Canonical and any distro is free to use it but some might not want to because of bad press. |

![]() How about something lightweight so I can use it on our Eee PC! I'm fed up of trying to find the right distro for it, though the Peppermint Ice OS I'm using at the moment is the closest I've come to the perfect choice. |

It will be based on Ubuntu. It is the most user friendly. I am also planning a Netbook OS and a Mobile OS. So it will be shrunk down. I might even go one step further and base it on the rock solid Debian. Do you think I should or stick with Ubuntu?
I need feedback with features and improvements. Bug-fixes. Also, the UI should I use Unity? I think it is a big improvement. I could code my own or edit Unity's source Last edited by freeview_user : 05-06-2011 at 12:07. Reason: Typo, added more |
