Check the compatibility link (right hand column) on the home page, there ain't much that is working yet.

ReactOS is a dreadful choice. It's alpha-quality software at best, largely incompatible with Windows, and utterly incompatible with Linux. If you want a system that won't even come close to working for the best part of a decade, try ReactOS.

Like Eric, I use Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit) for work, and I run it in a VirtualBox VM where it works perfectly. (Although recently, I've started using the open-source Audacity directly in Linux for very basic day to day tasks, and just use Audition for more complex editing.)

I agree. I wouldn't recommend any OS claiming compatibility with Windows other than Windows. ReactOS is not something I'd recommend personally.

Other news: Still looking good with the newest Ubuntu. Nothings turned up to ruin the party yet, other than what looks like a bug with ProjectM (it's an OpenGL visualiser for your music player if you didn't know), which seems to crash big style when using it with Banshee. I'll report that one in a bit if it hasn't been done, but otherwise all nice and pretty sexy if I say so myself! Unity looks good, works well, and the desktop seems solid thus far. It's gonna be a good one this time...

Good to hear it's all going well. It's a quiet Sunday, so I'm going to give the new version a try later on. I'm curious to see whether they've fixed the niggles I had with Unity in 11.04. I've pretty much settled on two partitions now, Ubuntu 10.04 for work, Arch for personal use and tinkering, so it'll be interesting to see whether I think 11.10 is ready to replace my venerable LTS!

(And since this is my 100th post, I'll say how glad I am that this thread has lasted so long, stayed friendly, constructive and on-topic and hasn't descended into OS wars like the PC/Mac topics!)

I foresee a time in the not too distant future as all the current tablets get 'broken' but will be fixable if you are vaguely technical and will be cheap as chips on eBay.

Has anyone tried Zorin OS 5 based on ubuntu. Excellent imo. I've been using Pinguy and ubuntu 11.04 both great imo.

What is it? If there's one thing KDE are good at, it's obscuring the true meaning of what they're doing behind a lot of buzzwords and jargon of their own making. It could be the greatest desktop environment ever invented, but I don't understand their website.

In other news, I really, really don't like Unity. It's just so fiddly, even in the new version. I've managed to take to Gnome 3, but for work, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS stays!

Just had a look at one of the screenshots from their website with a feature that lets you select which type of desktop look you want - like that.

I'd recommend it. I've had the 32bit running on a laptop and the 64bit running on a desktop for a couple of weeks now with no problems. Pinguy's another favourite of mine. I used to like opensuse but it wouldn't allow me to access my network drives for some reason.

well i've just taken a fresh image of my PC and downloaded zorin so i'll give it a spin when i'm back home later on.

at least it's ubuntu based so might actually install the graphics drivers without too much hassle !

using zorin now. works fine & graphics driver installed and running ok as well.

it's quite nice actually - compiz comes set up as standard which gives it a nice, whizzy look.

the default theme is a bit 'white' for my tastes though, although a bit of tinkering gets a nice black menu bar.

but overall, first impressions quite nice indeed.

might see what happens if i plug gnome 3 into it .. muahaha!

Not a fan of Zorin. Looks like an old version of Windows to me, but hey if it works for you it's none of my business.

The default desktop setting's a bit like a windows7 clone. Obviously to attract windows users. But you can change that to a similar layout to ubuntu gnome which I've done. Along with Pinguy it's my favourite linux os at the moment.

I've installed Lubuntu 11.10 on my ER1402, it runs very well. although the additional hardware app refuses to install the latest nvidia driver, a quick tap on the term fixed that!

With just DVBStreamer running, its only using 269 MB RAM, It's also nice to see that they've fixed that annoying hang on (re)boot.

Although my SAT receiver's driver just plain refuses to build, I suspect its down to the 3.0 kernel.

Yeah it's pretty great. We have Lubuntu 11.04 on our Eee and frankly it's the best I've known the little machine to perform. Doesn't feel underpowered with Lubuntu on it at all.


I know. I hate to be a snob, and I know Jason will be cursing me, but I've just never been a fan of Linux aping Windows, especially when Linux can look so great in it's own right without having to imitate anything else. It's OK to say well they're aiming it at Windows users, but surely a Windows user will just see it as a cheapo Windows that doesn't work the same way and doesn't do the things they're used to on Windows. Ultimately it's fooling no-one. Far better for Linux to aim to be the best Linux, rather than a Windows clone imho.

But like I say it's nowt to do with me if you run it happily. It's just my personal.

oh and sorry Kal_El still cant be doing with Ubuntu not having there workspaces work independent of each other, still got it installed and updated but cant get into it yet.

It's a sign I'm using a different OS. I haven't even attempted to use the workspaces on Ubuntu yet! I agree they should be completely independent. On Gnome 3.0 I love how they work as I've said many times. It's so simple to use and just makes sense. I never bothered with them much on other distros but on Gnome 3 I finally saw the point.

A quick tinker with them on Ubuntu 11.10 shows that they sort of are independent, with the icon on the bar remaining semi-highlighted if you're on a separate workspace. Click the icon and to be fair it does shoot to the other workspace, which works well. I suppose it's just another approach to get used to. I don't dislike it, but it's not quite as tactile as the Gnome shell approach.

No I never used to bother with them, as like you say, previous distros always had them interlinked in the same space and not really separate so I just didn't see the point. With Gnome 3 I could see the point and the workspaces felt like a different and totally separate area. Looking at Ubuntu's Unity approach, it's much the same as KDE4's in a way.

You might not like Gnome 3. Many don't. I love it personally, but I do think Unity feels more at home on a desktop than it. Let us know.

Well i plugged Gnome 3 into Zorin and it crapped out but that's cool - back on Windows now.

Well on my current Ubuntu 11.10 install, if I log out I can change the session to "Gnome", log back in and it's Gnome 3.2 with its own shell rather than the Unity desktop. They've done a pretty nice job of it too. I'll tailor it a bit later on with a couple of extensions, but it works "out of the box" the same as on my openSUSE. Could be worth a shot for you.

I quite like openSuse. I used it for a few months (11.04) my only problem was I couldn't access my vortex 1.10 server for some reason. Whereas I have no problem with ubuntu or windows7.

Starting to get the jitters a little bit with Ubuntu 11.10. It's mostly been OK, but today after installing Google Earth (which in itself was more convoluted than it needed to be, or has been in the past), I had a number of desktop crashes. I decided to reboot, but the reboot hung on a black screen that luckily a CTRL-ALT-DELETE sent to shut down. Another reboot and everything seems fine, but now I'm noticing VLC is pretty poor quality, with a lot of tearing no matter how I set it, and audio out of sync. There's a lot of random fixes about the internet, but I can't be bothered with all that again. All of this stuff worked just great on openSUSE 11.4 without any user intervention, so I'm considering going back shortly. I expect I'll clone this install though just in case I want to use it in a VM or whatever, but I think for my main OS it will have to be what works, and openSUSE Gnome 3 worked especially well for me.

I'll see how I feel about it tomorrow. Bit sad about it.
