I did manage to flash debian on my QNAP ARM device a few days ago, had a few issues that caused me to nearly pull my hair out I can tell you, but all is fine now, It's currently running webmin & DVBStreamer!

If I didn't have a shadow image saved of my C drive then yes, i'd get horribly bored. I actually used to fully re-install each time I tried a new distro - load windows, manually re-install each program one after the other.

Since I got a free (and perfectly legal, legal fans ) copy of Paragon Hard Disk Manager, I take regular shadow copies of my hard drive so if I do want to fanny around with a distro I can just re-load the shadow copy and leave it for 40 minutes odd and it's job done - zero effort on my part.

Just had a go with Ubuntu Ocelot (better late than never).Very pretty. All the people complaining about the icon positioning etc. must be right handed; to lefties like me it seems perfectly normal.

I'm right handed but I much prefer the bar on the left. There's a thread on the Ubuntu forums where someone has created a Compiz plugin to get the bar on the bottom, and I think it looks wrong.

Was playing with the openSUSE 12.1 Gnome 3 RC1 yesterday, and was really impressed. Gnome 3.2 is just lovely, and I love the distro. Seriously considering moving back to it when it's released. The one downside of all these DE's is I want to have them all, but Unity and Gnome 3 are forcing me to choose between them! I love both, but Gnome 3 on Ubuntu is just not the same as on openSUSE.

I updated Ubuntu. It does take a bit of getting used to. The new interface is confusing at first. I still have to play around with it a bit more and get a better feel of it.

Yes, I won't lie to you, I had to adapt my behaviour after six months of using Gnome shell. But now it's no problem. Took me about three days to be able to say "I am comfortable using this".

All DE's are habit-forming imho. You get on with it eventually, and what seemed odd at first soon becomes second nature.

Well i'm back .. on Windows.

That version of Ubuntu installed fine. The additional hardrware wizard found and installed the drivers fine and I could set the correct resolution but the menu bar was just completely glitched and unreadable.

Tried Fedora - whole screen glitched out.

Suse - drivers loaded fine, resolution fine but Gnome 3 failed to load. Went into fallback and wouldn't come out.

So big fat MEH

They mean Unity, rather than Gnome 3 on Ubuntu, I would imagine. You should report your bugs to them. I know I would if I had these issues.

You tried Unity didn't you? Didn't you like it? I find it's not long before you're used to it, and I really love it now. If Ubuntu works well, I'd just stay with that.

Yeah I did try Unity and it just really didn't do it for me. I posted a bit of a rant on the Ubuntu forums earlier and someone has apparently directed me to a thread that will - allegedly - enable the mythical open source ati drivers for use so i might have a go at that later on

Just seen your thread on Ubuntu Forums. As long as you remember when you are installing your Linux that you do not tick the box that says to download non-free software while installing, you should find the default drivers are the OSS ones. I don't know if that's the same for other distros, but it's certainly true of Ubuntu. I always tick the box as I want the proprietary Nvidia driver, but for the free Nouveau driver I would have to leave it unticked. Post install, I would have to look up how to enable it as I wouldn't have a clue.

I've actually got it working though. Properly working. Full Gnome 3 in full 1440x900 resolution with the 'official' ATI Drivers.

It's still a tad glitchy - it was glitching out completely to the point it just blew up the menu and I had to reboot.

Enabled "tear free" mode in the Catalyst Control Centre and it's resolved that issue.

I need to play around with the graphics to see if the driver is properly working though - in system info it still tells me the driver is VESA.

Firefox theme is also a bit wanky as well (is that a word? It is now ! ). The Echofon plugin I have for Twitter glitches and appears transparent a lot.

But. Finally. As it stands. It works

Don't know. I looked at the thread that was linked to in the Ubuntu forums and found the bug report regarding fglrx. Scrolled down the many replies and found a method that someone said worked for him and tried it.

I think it was basically purging and re-installing fglrx and then installing the official ATI drivers over the top - something like that. I'll probably have to confirm what I did when I re-install it.

Anyway, just installed and ran "Open Arena" to test out the graphics and it runs like a charm - smooth as silk and looks good as well.

So what I might do later on is have a play around with some themes just to see if anything clicks - the AdWaita theme is fine, but I'd like to see if I can jazz the status bars up a tad.

All being well, i'll restore the windows image i have and then start copying stuff off that I want to keep so I can re-re-install this ubuntu 'remix' and move to Gnome 3 full time.

Think i'll definitely have to try a re-install with the OSS drivers - it's still working fine, but it's glitching to the point of becoming a bit annoying at the moment. Running different programs or even using something like Banshee to play some music, it'll glitch out, the screen will just essentially go 'splat' and it looks like the menu crashes and re-starts.

Maybe the OSS drivers will be a bit more stable ..

fglrx is, i believe, part of the proprietary driver, so you don't want that.

The package that contains the OSS driver for your card should be "xserver-xorg-video-radeon" (or possibly xserver-xorg-video-ati).

1) Install Ubuntu without the proprietary software button checked.
2) You're done! It should be running with the OSS driver. Check in System Profiler, or run "lspci -v" from a terminal.

I'll have a crack at that later today - back on windows temporarily. my problem was always forcing the 1440x900 resolution though, but we'll see how we go.

now that I know i can get it working i'm certainly more willing to give it a proper go.

Ok, update time .. re-installed without ticking the boxes to install non-free software. tried to get something to happen with the open source drivers but nothing was biting so went back to what i did last night.

Used this code :

followed by installing the new 11.10 version of the ATI drivers. Rebooted and added "export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none" to /etc/environment and, after rebooting again, still saw a bit of glitching.

Enabled "tear free" mode in catalyst control centre and it does appear to have completely eliminated the problem.

I'm playing some tunes in clementine and surfing around for a bit and i'm getting none of the screen glitches or menu crashes.

So, by jingo, I may well have properly cracked it .. at last
