You guys seen this? Commodore OS. Wow, what a trailer!

Looks absolutely fantastic. Apparently it's based on Mint 10, so it's a wee bit outdated, but I'll forgive it that when it looks so damn fine! I love how they've given it a modern theme but kept the familiar tones of the old stalwart. Colour me impressed.

May be outdated but Mint 10 series has the advantage of being reliable\stable so should work for people that have driver issues, no names mentioned

"Commodore OS Vision comes with nearly 8 Gigabytes of the best free open source software available covering almost every conceivable use case."
It's a big distro but difficult to resist trying. I can't wait

What's the point, when with other distros you can download a CD image covering common uses (web, email, office) and then grab what you need for your own specialist usage from the repository? You'd just be filling your computer with stuff you'll never open. May as well go for Windows!

I agree really. It's better just doing that. Have you tried bodhi 121 great minimalistic distro without even a media player on but it has a great software centre. Very light on resources using the enlightenment 2 desktop. Ideal for old computers.

I agree too, but this does look fun. Hopefully it'll turn up on a Linux Format disc before too long. I haven't got 20 hours to download it!

Yes that'd be good if it came with the mag. I think it was just the word commodore that got me excited. Reminded me of when my kids were young and always playing on it

Just installed Mint12 without any diffs - no problem getting Jdownloader installed - Grub customizer also works well so no issue in my case quad booting XP, W7 & Win Server with it. Also allowed me to customise the background to my usual pic - get the firefox icon looking correct plus the max-min-X buttons in the right corner - Have recently tried Fedora16 & Ubuntu11.10 but there was always something I didn't take to - so will stick with Mint for a while.

Doesn't sound too good !

We'll see though - what i'll probably do is kick off the download every time i go online so after a few days i would expect it to eventually finish.

decided to drop the 2nd disk download - i think if i'd tried to persevere with both it would have taken a month

(even as uTorrent is showing Disk 1 has 7 weeks left to download )

i decided to leave the PC on overnight which proved to be a good idea as both disks downloaded perfectly fine.

and i'm using it now - it works !. And it looks amazing.

very blue !

i've literally only just rebooted so i haven't attempted any graphics drivers though, but if they work then I absolutely would switch to this.

i'll have a play around with it for a bit and report back ..

ok, ATI drivers installed .. and working

it comes pre-installed with ten emulators for every conceivable commodore piece of hardware you can think of, right down to the Commodore Pet and Plus/4.

There's also the Dosbox emulator and a "PC Operating System Emulator" which I haven't run yet.

It also has an extensive list of games pre-installed with a "retro" menu with things like "arkanoid clone", "paradroid clone", "boulderdash clone" e.t.c..

the "sound and video" menu is very extensive. you've got the XBMC Media Centre pre-installed along with a C64 SID Music Composer/Player. VLC is pre-installed and there's also a "blu-ray ripper" program pre-installed that i've just run and even though it's apparently shareware with a 30-day trial period, the error message that told you that actually spoke - imagine the voice in 'Impossible Misson' and you've got the right idea

There's also a winamp clone, ISO Master, Video Conversion and editing as well.

It's pre-installed with Firefox and Chrome as well.

(i'm just looking through the menus and typing here..)

Pre-installed with IRC, Pidgin, Google Earth, Filezilla, Skype as well.

The home folder is interesting as there's a pre-configured folder for Torrents there.

and probably best of all, the terminal software is pre-configured to look exactly like the original Commodore 64 OS

there's also a "commodore extras" menu that gives you the option to install codecs, but also to download and install the "C64 Forever" and "Amiga Forever" software, so I imagine you'll have access to games and stuff from that, providing you don't have to pay for it.

My one gripe at the moment is that there are no apparent window controls so you can't minimise or maximise or drag anything - the prime example is that when firefox opens, it's a bit 'squashed' because the docking bar at the bottom of the screen is still visible.

Might be able to figure it out though - hope so. A lot of the system sounds also sound like the original C64 stuff as well.

All in all, so far, loving it

ok the lack of window controls was becoming exceedingly irritating, because I couldn't get it to work - even changing the windows borders in the themes option didn't seem to work.

i changed it to "simple" and randomly rebooted, which did actually work and I have the minimise, maximise and close options on the window borders now but i'm also stuck with it - it doesn't seem to want to change back.

looks very garish and out of place as well - i've tried changing back to the default theme and rebooting but i'm still stuck with the "simple" window controls ..

have to go out soon so might have one more try and see if i can change it ..

ok, took a screenie so you can see what the window bar looks like with the "simple" theme

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/4532/screeniea.jpg

the default CommodoreOS theme is meant to be a lot more minimalist, and it does have window controls but I just can't bloody see them !!

might go back to windows for now and see if they release any updates or tweak it a bit .. dunno. have to pop out so i'll decide when i get back.

I'll be giving this a go! The video was impressive and so far from what has been said it looks awesome!

Yes but it's well in keeping with the C64 theme. I love it personally, and would love to give it a go.
