Does anyone actually still use Ubuntu?
Switched to Mint years ago.

You do know that is Ubuntu. With a GUI change.

Yes but it's Ubuntu done right.

TBH I'd still be using Ubuntu if it hadn't kept on throwing up a seemingly incurable HAL error. Mint was my last roll of the Linux dice and it was a winner.

I currently use Ubuntu 11.10 on a very old Acer Aspire 5040 laptop running 1gb ram and it is fine so far. Copes with all updates and appears very stable even for an apparant slow machine that failed to run XP, Vista or 7 without major problems.

Actually its not, or not for much longer
With cinnamon being worked on, and also the Debian rolling releases of Xfce\Lmde And soon even KDE will be moved away from Kubuntu. Mint will be free of the ''its only Ubuntu\Kubuntu jazzed up'' tag

Im still impressed (no i dont work for them ) By how far and quick the Mint project has moved on since it was founded in 2006, and all done on a very small budget and staff level, at one point working from home using a dial up connection
Whilst reading the Mint forums\blogs its nice to read and see that Clem and the staff still listen to what people want, and still have there feet on the ground. Unlike some big Linux releases.

And now with a new partnership http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1913 hopefully the only way is up

What does everyone think of the Ubuntu HUD idea?

It's very interesting and could be a nice feature. Interesting times ahead for Ubuntu.

It's really cool and very interesting, but I don't think it's a complete replacement for user menus, I really don't.

Looks pretty, but isnt it a bit of a backwards step for the mainstream to command line type typing and ignoring the GUI.
I can see how it could be useful in some circumstances, but for most users it will be another learning curve to be searching and finding commands.

Already there if you enable the Kubuntu backports PPA. And on every other rolling/development release... except Arch. It's stuck in the testing repository and not going anywhere (ie. enable it and break your system). No information on the delay, its usually released for public consumption on the same day. So I'm stuck on 4.7 for the foreseeable future. Arch users though are a patient bunch, very few if any queries about the delay (anyone who queries it is knocked down and told to wait).

Ubuntu software centre installed Vuze for me, but it can't find a program calledfreecoder.

Does anyone know of a program that captures\records streams that you watch?

freecoder does that in windows but unfortunately not in ubuntu.

That's pretty cool, but I'm quite happy with KDE4.7 on Kubuntu at the moment. I'd change it if I wasn't happy, but it's running so well for me and I love it. I'll wait for 12.04. The nice thing is that Kubuntu 12.04 will be a LTS release, as will Xubuntu. This is great news imho.

I finally got to grips with Ubuntu 11.10 after trying Gnome 3 on Mint 12.

In a nutshell, all the fear and loathing about Unity need not be a showstopper. You can undo all the fluff and get your machine back to old-skool Linux style (but with wobbly windows of course).

I just set the Unity launcher to hide, to need half a second of mouse before it pops out, and it's as good as gone unless I access deliberately via alt-F1 or alt-F2 keystrokes. I disabled the Super key so it doesn't conflict with other keystrokes I use. I shrunk the icons to 32x32 so when it does appear it doesn't look like something from a kid's nursery. All via the compiz settings manager (in Virtualbox!)

I've bound all my favourite apps to keystrokes with xbindkeys, set up the shift switcher for workspaces, disabled the global menubar and the daft scrollbars.

I think it's safe to move my two desktops from 10.10 to 12.04 when 12.04 comes out.

I'm already using KDE yakuake which is a drop-down terminal which does the job, but if HUD doesn't break it, it could be nice 'cos drop-down is nice.

Any love for the more minimal distos on here? Such as gentoo and arch, where you only install exactly what you need.

Puppy Linux is great.

Apparently it was developed by an Australian named Barry Kauler.

If he had called it "Kangaroo Linux"

Would it have been a HOPerating system?

This hints at very big news for Linux.
Linux could be used for computing with the Android layer for fast boot APPS and safe surfing. Laptop friendly?

RC1 supposedly came out a good few weeks ago

I'm not convinced. The idea of fuzzy searching when you type a command in feels like a recipe for frustration. It seems like it would stop ubuntu being widely used outside of techy people if it look shard to use.

I'm still not convinced by Unity anyway. This appears to make it worse but I'll give it a whirl and see.

I'm still not sure what this HUD is. But fuzzy searching for commands sounds like Visual Assist.

If it is like Visual Assist then it will certainly have not problem gaining ground. Its a programming tool, some dont like it out of principle of it making you lazy, and other have no problem with it and try not to depend on it. Some do depend on it.

There's a video demo knocking about on a blog somewhere. That's where I saw it. I don't have a link to hand though. Sorry.
