Yes latest mint 13 rocks - even runs well on my lower spec PC using mate. Also still works well with grub customizer so I can multi boot any other OS I want to try.
It really is something. I didn't expect to like it, as I've never really got the idea of Mint, and always seen it as just Ubuntu with a new theme and some codecs. Now though, it makes sense as its own animal. Cinnamon really differentiates it from the rest and works so well. It's really, well, perfect. I can't see me hopping for some time. I absolutely love the workspaces on the hot corner. Tremendous.

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 on my dual boot desktop. More than a few problems, (like still being stuck on 3.0.0-12-generic linux kernel) - although the important stuff is mostly sorted now. That dynamic launch bar in 11.10 was giving me some serious grief in Firefox.
Dunno though.... - still might try Mint 13 after all.

Also i will have to have a go sometime at loading Ubuntu whilst blindfolded, wasn't aware you could do that with it.

Just a left handed thing i supose, i do it when im writing, so instinct is the same when typing.

Im not totaly left handed, unlike some friends, eg if playing darts i use my right. Pool, snooker is defo left only. Unlike Ronnie O'Sullivan.
I can use tools, hammer, screwdiver etc with ease with either hand without thinking about it.

Edit ... i can also use mouse in either hand as well

A quick cut and paste from Slashdot ... "Fedora 17 aka "Beefy Miracle" is released. Some of the major features include: ext4 with >16TB filesystems, dynamic firewall configuration, automatic multi-seat, and more. Major software updates include Gnome 3.4, GIMP 2.8, and GCC 4.7. The full feature list can be found here. ."

Anyone here ever used Cairo Dock? I've just added it to my Linux Mint install, and just wow. I used to use Avant Window Navigator years ago and always liked it, and while it does work right now, development ceased some time ago. Cairo though is still in active development which is great, and the whole thing is crazily configurable and theme-able. If you're using Mint with Cinnamon, I'd definitely recommend you give it a go.

Finally managed to get Ubuntu 12.04 working properly with 3.2.0-24 Linux kernel. The trick was to reinstall keeping my finger on shift after boot till I got the menu that enabled me to select" Other options" where I could insert "nomodeset" then control X to carry on. Then - after installation - install the recommended Nvidea proprietary driver using the "Additional Drivers" in system settings. Not immediately obvious.... .... but all part of the adventure...

I'm getting use to the precise pangolin and really likeing it so far..

Thanks... No but it's a free download and let's be honest - I wouldn't expect a beginner to take any old PC and install the latest Windows on it.

I've just put Kubuntu 12.04 on a Compaq CQ61 belonging to a friend who isn't computer literate. He has another friend who can probably put Windows 7 back on it, if he so wishes, but it'll be interesting to see how he copes.

Installation worked first time and everything (pad scrolling, wireless and sound included) just worked without any extra work. If he sticks with it I'll probably set up remote desktop and ssh forwarding in his modem/router.

I used these commands to get the proprietary stuff, but made sure the actual user pressed enter to accept the 'licences' of course.

Code:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo apt-mark manual gstreamer* libavcodec-extra-53 libmp3lame0 unrar ttf-mscorefonts-installer lame libk3b6-extracodecs libdvdread4
sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-installer kubuntu-restricted-addons kubuntu-restricted-extras
Then I enabled the Partner Repo in Muon and:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin adobe-flash-properties-kde
Tested YouTube a bit and then installed Google Earth and even that worked.

Congratulations to Linus of course.

Yes congrats to Linus, even though he can be opinionated somewhat.

Don't forget to add Medibuntu for your DVD playback (libdvdcss2), Archiver.

Just had to do an OS upgrade to a very expensive drum machine via MIDI! There were plenty of details on the support forum on how to set buffer sizes and delays for the recommended Windows/Mac system exclusive librarian programs and recommendations to try the other if one doesn't work. So I used Linux (sysexxer built from source) and there was just nothing to adjust. Worked first time perfectly.

This is only for hardware that uses the new UEFI BIOS. Everyone else will be using GRUB2 as usual.

Anybody ever tried this distro? I downloaded it yesterday, and have to say it's a very nice KDE/Kubuntu based distro that seems to have been buffed up well. I'm going to take a snapshot of my current beau and install this, with a view to playing for a while. I miss KDE, and this could be the one to get me back.

Not tried it, but it should be a good choice for KDE.
Dont know if youre aware of this...

The positive thing that may come out of it, is the colabiration between Mint and Netrunner sponsership,
http://www.netrunner-os.com/partnership-with-mintkde/
its to take on the KDE (thats been lacking with Mint) project and hopefully keep it moving on and up!

All of this has come about because of sponsorship from this company called Blue Systems. What's peculiar to me is no-one knows very much at all about them. They're handling a lot of KDE based distros, such as Mint like you say, and Kubuntu, and now this NetRunner, and not only that but they are working on a few Gtk integration packages. They're seemingly putting a lot in, but they're quite mysterious. Maybe we'll find out more in time. I think it's good though. KDE is probably the very best Linux desktop there is.

Just backing up my Ubuntu install, and should have NetRunner on in a short while.

It caused alot of excitment on the Mint forums when it was first announced, as KDE has never been a priority with the Mint devs according to the forums.

Hope Netrunner is ok, are you doing 32 or 64? as Netrunner site says there may be a slight glitch at the moment with the 64 installer.

Im off out in a bit, and garden is still on hold due to the British (summer ) weather so may have a go at it later.

edit... Also nice to read they include codecs as standard, and also Firefox has Flash and Addblock pre installed.

Nah. Couldn't be.

OK, so installed now. First impressions...would have been good if it had enabled a graphics driver! I rebooted into a 640x480 screen. It didn't even enable Nouveau. I tried to use Additional Drivers, but it complained when I tried to install the post release driver. I ran the system updates, of which there were a lot, which was a surprise considering this has only just been released, then rebooted. The screen was still the wrong resolution, so I tried again with the driver dialogue. Again it wouldn't work with the newer driver, but it did let me install the older one. I notice a few references to "Unity" in the Jockey dialogue window....

So after a bit of swearing I got the driver installed and am having a play. Firefox is the last version, even after the updates. However, KDE is still bloody lovely, and it looks fantastic here. But!, it idles really high - nearly using 1Gb of RAM doing nothing!

They've gone to some effort to make this look like Windows, with a 7 window theme that is admittedly attractive, but it's not something I generally go for personally. There's a ton of external PPA's added, which is something else I'm not a great fan of, doubly so when it's for stuff I don't use, but they can be removed I suppose.

I don't expect I'll keep it around, but it has sufficiently got me back interested in KDE desktops again. I'll definitely be interested to see what Blue Systems have in store for Kubuntu, Mint KDE, and indeed the future of NetRunner. But at the moment it feels like they just took Kubuntu and added a bunch of PPA's. That's great for a newbie, but for me, well I could have done that myself in no time. For newbies though, I would definitely look into this one. It'll likely impress you a great deal.
