(K)Ubuntu 12.04 - Warning!

I am an experienced Linux user and just built a new machine using an Intel Core i5 CPU but was suffering regular "Hard lock-ups". Lock-ups were so bad that even the reset button had no effect. I was just starting to contemplate replacing PSU, memory then motherboard, all of which were new.

Then I found this:
"Very good news for Intel Ivybridge (i5-3570k etc.) users!
It's a kernel bug (drm-intel).
Install Linux 3.3.6 and the system runs stable )"

I can confirm that this has solved my problems!
I have been using Linux since Kernel 2.0 and never had such an unstable system as this was.

Handy tip. Is there a guide anywhere for anyone to use to accomplish a new kernel install? I vaguely remember reading something about Intel Ivy Bridge problems that like you say are fixed in the newer kernels. Intel contributes directly to the mainline kernel afaik so the future should be good for users of these CPU's and Linux.

I'm looking forward to the 3.4 kernel, not so much for myself but there's supposed to be power saving improvements in there so many laptop users can benefit. Currently the missus' laptop with Xubuntu and our Eee have very poor battery life. I'm hoping this will fix, or at least improve it.

Sorry, I didn't bookmark the source and now in a hurry, I can't find it but here is the info for installing the new kernel.
--------------------------------------------------------

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...3.3.6-precise/

Download these files in a folder:
linux-headers-3.3.6-030306-generic_3.3.6-030306.201205121335_amd64.deb
linux-headers-3.3.6-030306_3.3.6-030306.201205121335_all.deb
linux-image-3.3.6-030306-generic_3.3.6-030306.201205121335_amd64.deb

Start the Terminal, go to your download folder and type this:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

---------------------------------------------------------
Edit: This bug is discussed here:
DS won't allow me to add the URL so search Google for:

ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently

Its the first hit then post #91 for the "fix".

I'm looking forward to the 3.4 kernel,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=traegZveTKo

http://askubuntu.com/questions/14219...-kubuntu-12-04

3.4.4 is now a stable release
http://www.kernel.org/

or if youre brave you could mess with loading the 3.5

Disclaimer... its at youre own risk to mess with Kernel, it will auto update in time on your chosen OS.
But if youre like Kal_El and me and others then you wont be able to resist a self update

Valve Confirm ‘Steam’, ‘Left 4 Dead 2′ Coming to Ubuntu

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/07/v...ming-to-ubuntu

Quote:
Valve are bringing their digital games distribution client ‘Steam’, and a AAA gaming title, to Ubuntu, the company has officially announced.

Is this really news? You already knew about it? I hear you. Valve’s Linux plan was, arguably, one of the worst kept, but most anticipated, secrets in Linux gaming history.

But with this announcement you can rest assured that it is happening; no hear’say; no rumour; no dodgy conversation snippets billed as ‘exclusives’; this time word is coming straight from the horse’s mouth.
Sweet

Seems like it's Ubuntu first, then other distros after if it's a success. It sounds like a lot of work is going into integrating it with mainline Ubuntu. I do hope that doesn't leave those of us using Kubuntu or Xubuntu with a ropey looking app, or even worse unable to use it at all.

Thats an interesting point actually. I'll have a dig around the dev forums and see what Valve say.

It's kicking off!

Really exciting times. I don't think it'll be everything we want from the get-go, but I do think it will become something just as amazing as the Windows platform over time.

Maybe not Nvidia, considering the rant Linus Torvalds had at them

Apparently, the opposite happened. I expect things will improve greatly as far as graphics drivers are concerned once Steam picks up pace. Valve have already stated they are contributing to the Linux graphics stack.

Well compared to some Linux distros, but i see youre point Kal_EI
and love or hate them, they have done wonders to promote Linux.

It makes commercial sense to go with them, and it will filter through to the rest of Linux.

Exactly. Like it or not its probably the most well known linux distro. I dont know about market share of install base though. Are there numbers about for that?

The problem with getting numbers is they tend to have a server v desktop! versions.
Also there are a awful lot of distros that rely on Ubuntu, that in turn relies on Debian etc etc

Take a look at http://distrowatch.com/ and you would think Mint was way more popular than Ubuntu, but thats not the case.

Also the recent split\choice of, Gnome3 or Unity has muddied the waters a bit.

Blimey i recognise some old names there. Like Solaris and Yellow Dog that i've not heard for a few years.

I'd like to thank Microsoft for doing so much to generate interest and growth in Linux usage:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18996377

Microsoft hoping to go head-to-head with Apple and the temptation adopt some of their principles such as making Windows a closed platform (maybe move to ARM in future with secure boot and stuff Linux that way) appears to have Valve consider the idea of pushing Linux support for Steam to the forefront.

It's generating a lot of discussion elsewhere in the ether.

MS would need to do something to help Linux grow considering they demand licensing fees from developers and the number of MS patents they claim Linux infringes on (even though they can never say what patents when asked).

I've been following this with great interest. It seems Gabe Newell is pretty upset with the locking down of the Windows platform. MS have obviously got a hard on for Apple, but I think it's an area they're going to get slaughtered in. Their phones still don't really command any respect from the market, and Windows 8 is hardly wowing people.

But it's great for other more open platforms. Only time will tell how this is going to go, Joe.

Richard Stallman - Oh dear

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-19065082

Quote:
A leading PC-user rights campaigner has voiced concern about video games developer Valve's move to sell Linux-based versions of its products.

Richard Stallman - founder of the Free Software Foundation and the GNU operating system - said charging users for DRM-protected games on the open-source platform would be "unethical".

Snip

"Non-free game programs (like other non-free programs) are unethical because they deny freedom to their users," he wrote on his blog.
Giving consumers what they want is unethical? Also how are non free games unethical?

Then again, a lot of his views have always been fairly fanatical.
