As we pay for sky movies and sports, you can watch a movie or sports event without the need of a dish or sky box ![]() Bit strange as they say you can use Sky go on Android devices. Would have thought Ubuntu would have sorted something with there new Unity desktop setup. Edit... Doh was go try XBMC ![]() http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=131427 |

Me bumping again with the next distro hop.
![]() Backed up my Mint 13 install, and decided to give Kubuntu 12.10 a go now. It's not long before its due, and what with feeling ill it's the perfect excuse to sit at the PC all day. ![]() I think if you fancy giving it a go, it's ready now. I've installed it with little resistance, and as per the last couple of Kubuntu releases it's as gorgeous as ever. I've added a couple of custom themes and generally tailored it how I like, but not had any fixing or messing at all so far. I would say, based on my admittedly limited testing so far, it'll be another capable, solid and reliable release from Blue Systems. Whoever they are. Will it ultimately replace Mint for me? Only time will tell.

I liked the sound of
http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=07483 Arch base running Cinammon. Had a go with it but had some issues with the graphical installer, had to do it hard way in the end. It is a new project, so will give them time to fine tune it before loading it again. As a Mint user, and KDE user, i would have thought you would have heard about Blue System ages ago. (or is that what the is for )http://blue-systems.com/ http://www.netrunner-os.com/about/ They are sponsoring KDE as it seems to be being pushed aside http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...tem&px=MTEyNzI http://www.datamation.com/open-sourc...h-watch-1.html |

![]() Yes I'd heard of them a while ago. Actually, it turns out the guy running it is a millionaire owner of a German football team and a meat factory. Or summat. Gawd knows what he wants to do with KDE, but it's going well so good on him. Well Kubuntu rocks, but I can see myself restoring my Mint backup tomorrow. For no real reason other than I just prefer Mint and its ecosystem. I will stress that there's nothing wrong at all with KDE and Kubuntu. They are both awesome. But I only have so much disk space! |

Do like Mint, but it recently (this yrs releases in any form) doesnt play stable enough with my set up
So made the discovery of ultra stable, Xubuntu http://xubuntu.org/ this year, and have never looked back. Thats why http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=07483 caught my attention, though Arch base running Cinammon would have suited my setup, but it was a bit too much faffing to get it installed, put me off

Yes I spotted this one. I thought the whole point of it was to make Arch easy for the lazier among us. Obviously not! It looks nice though, and Cinnamon is a good choice for a light yet modern DE. I've had no issues with it at all on my setup with Mint, though I hear that many have. I even upgraded to the 1.6.1 preview from their Romeo repository, and had it running perfectly. I'm on Nvidia though, which I think says a lot about the nature of GPU drivers and the stability of Linux.

Great. My dad's picked up a cheap second hand laptop from "one of those places" and it's in a right tangle. It comes with Vista, but you'd hardly know it. I had it booting up for thirty minutes and it still didn't get to the main desktop! All sorts of crap kept popping up for your attention, various PC "cleaners" and dodgy looking anti-virus stuff. I've actually never seen one this bad. I mean you hear about them, but I've never seen such a machine in such a terrible state. I can see why the person thought it was time for a new one.
It's quite a nice system. It's a Dell Inspiron with 1Gb RAM and a single 2.16Ghz processor (the name escapes me), and Intel GM45 graphics (I got all this from the BIOS). There's probably nothing I can do to fix it, so I'm thinking sod it. I'll nuke it with Mint 13 KDE if the live USB and hardware works OK.

Honestly it's not difficult to get around at all. The theme tweaking options are all there in system settings. In fact everything you could possibly need is in system settings!

Well the missus has a ATI Radeon thing in here laptop, a fairly newish one, and I installed the proprietary Catalyst driver for it on Ubuntu 12.04. So far the performance has been really good actually, much better than I expected. She doesn't do a lot of gaming, but video is definitely solid with no tearing or glitching at all, and Unity runs beautifully. If you find out why Mint doesn't run so well please let me know. This sounds very strange. Maybe Cinnamon just needs a bit of maturing before you try again. Did you try the 1.6 version in Romeo?
![]() As i dont really bother with games anymore, hmm is it a age thing! Ive removed the HD3870 Card (its a good few yrs old) and restarted with the on board graphics, not sure what chip set it is yet, but its a new board this yr. Windows and Xbuntu run Iplayer HD fine (no chance of games) Its any form of Mint that i have problems with, but downloading latest Cinnamon now, will give it a run with onboard graphics. Used nothing but Mint a few yrs ago, run a dream, see how this goes. edit ... and tried cinammon on ubuntu , didnt have any problems, but its not as slick as the Mint/Cinnammon mix but as said before dont have issues with anything Ubuntu based, just Mint based.

Just unlock widgets and then click and hold on it and move it right up into the corner. It should change shape and be less obtrusive. |

Nope, no luck, same old story. As soon as i start changing backgrounds , themes etc to set it to my prefrences. It starts locking up ![]() Thats any version of Mint. As said in previous post, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu all run fine ![]() Oh well, will stick with my rock steady Xubuntu, it does what it says on the tin

It starts locking up ![]() Thats any version of Mint. ![]() Got my dads laptop sorted toot-sweet. Took the gamble, wiped the whole thing, and stuck Mint KDE on it. Went exceptionally well. I had to have an ethernet line plugged in to get the Broadcom driver, but it was plain sailing after that. I chose Mint for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's very very easy for anyone to use. I picked KDE because I think it's the best desktop experience personally, when stepping back from the whole one DE vs another debate. KDE is just the best one, period. But Mint and KDE together was much better than going the 'bunt route for him simply because of how it updates. He won't have to deal with Ubuntu's kernel updates because Mint doesn't work like that. There's the long term support, but the updates are much easier going and he'll have much less fuss from it. I made the text bigger for his eyesight, installed a few interesting things he might like and themed it up a bit, and I reckon he'll love it. I pass it back to him on Thursday. We'll see.

Got an SSD (and 5200mAh battery) for my ThinkPad X61 today. Decided not to continue having the X61 as a Hackintosh and installed Mint 13 XFCE. Runs so nice, 14 seconds from power-on to GDM and 3 seconds to log into the desktop.
With the new battery, life is estimated at just shy of 5 hours so perfect for out and about writing. Also upgraded my router from a 2-year old version of TomatoUSB to EasyTomato. It's Linux so it counts.

Since they're only targeting a single router model (Asus RT-N16) which i happen to have i thought i'd just use their release rather than follow ToastMan's or Shibby's builds. If you're not using Tomato what did you move your router to? After a lot of frustration with a Draytek 2820vn a couple of years back i vowed to never again use a router that couldn't be loaded with custom firmware. OpenWRT is pretty nice (although the WebGUI leaves a lot to be desired) and they've recently released a beta for Attitude Adjustment. If i were buying a router now i'd probably go for a TP-Link WDR4300 running OpenWRT since it's cheap and simultaneous dual-band. |

There hasn't been an official release of TomatoUSB in almost 2 years, but there are many forks around with lots of improvements in those 2 years.

Used to use Tomato ages ago on a Linksys router. It was excellent, though I don't know a great deal about routers in general. It seemed nice and simple.
Yes I spotted the reference to Windows 8 too, 1saintly. Very cheeky. As for the side bar on Ubuntu, I still don't think you can move it. Like you, it matters not to me as I'm on Kubuntu and KDE, where I can please myself where shit goes. I haven't gone back to Mint (yet), and this is mostly because Kubuntu 12.10 is just so bloody nice. It just does everything and then some. I can't fault it, and can see no reason to switch back at all.Well, Mint KDE was a massive success on my dad's laptop. He was absolutely thrilled with it, and I do have to say it really freshened it up. Showed him some bits and bats around it, and left him to it. For £50, it actually seems a real bargain now. Until I get the tech support questions at 2am.

Right, be back online in 15min with a full new fresh install of Xubuntu, complete with updates and customised to my liking
![]() Have been running alpha and betas but always like a clean install when its finally released, instead of a forced update. No technical reason, just my quirky ways

Moving from TomatoUSB to EasyTomato has substantially increased my download speed too. For the past 2 years my download speed on Usenet hasn't exceed 950Kbps but today, with EasyTomato, it's sustaining 1.1Mbps-1.2Mbps. I'm pretty sure it's due to improvements in the QOS system over the past 2 years. So, those new Chromebooks look nice. If i hadn't just upgraded my laptop i'd be considering one. |
