I had Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon installed on my main PC.
It was OK but not really suited to a big widescreen monitor IMO. The taskbar couldn't be widened, and the icons on it were inscrutable. However I started to have problems with the shell crashing. I'd be listening to music and I'd notice that the taskbar, dock and window chrome etc had disappeared. You could use the mouse and bring up the terminal to shutdown or restart though. It started doing occasionally, but progressed to happening every few minutes. ![]() Anyway I uninstalled that and have put Kubuntu on it. I think KDE is probably the best looking desktop environment for a large widescreen monitor at the mo, as you can make the taskbar as wide as you like, and you have all the plasmoid widgets to look at. ![]() However I generally prefer Gnome to KDE, and on my other PC, which has a smaller 16:10 monitor, I like Ubuntu Unity. I'll probably give Cinnamon another bash when Mint 14 comes out, but not on my main PC. |

A friend is wanting to use Linux, but one thing he needs is Itunes, as he currently has a lot of his life setup to using it. Ive tried to convince him otherwise, but he says he really likes it.
Ive never bothered to look into ways working around itunes in linux, as I've a few machines so always have Win alongside linux to use, if I have to. Im going to install Ubuntu on his machine for now and may move him on to better later. I've lent him an old laptop to play with and he really enjoys that. I was thinking of setting up a virtual win OS on Linux (vmware/virtualbox) but hes limited on memory and Im not sure hell really be able to cope with it. So anyone use itunes with linux in any way? |

Can also adjust size of bottom task bar ![]() Not sure what specific problems you had with icons? And so far no crashes, would have thrown a wobbly by now on older Mint. Will try it for a week, but still have my Xfce running as back up

I installed Linux Mint image on a virtualbox.
Couldn't get on with it at all, I found I couldn't do anything usable with it at all. Firefox worked, that was about it. Seems that the only software that works with any particular distro is stuff that you compile the source code directly. Linux seems to lack a decent installer as well, I found a number of software installs wouldn't run without super user privileges. There's also a number of things you can't do that you just take for granted on windows, ping being one of them. I gave up in the end and deleted it. |

Still bloody boring looking though. I see from the website that they've dropped Nautilus in favour of Nemo as the file manager. No idea what the difference is, but at least Nemo has a more traditional icon, rather than the spiral shell icon of Nautilus. Haven't used screen-savers for years, so don't miss 'em.

Hiya guys. Not posted for a while as I have the builders in and my PC is in storage. So no Linux for me for a while, except for this tiny EeePC I have with Bodhi Linux on. It'll tide me over. ![]() Quote:

I know. It's really hard going at the moment. The whole house is getting done and we're having to live in it. Coupled with no Linux or PC, makes Kal El feel much less Super than usual. However I am much cheered to read about how awesome the new Mint is. So far early opinions are really positive looking around the net. It's not made the Mint or Distrowatch front page yet though, so I don't think it's officially out just yet.

Just installed Mint 14 Nadia and it's as good as ever. One thing I've noticed and it may just be paranoia, is that when a new version comes out the previous one starts to misbehave. It's happened several times over the past few years: icons don't work, desktops please themselves which version they launch, menus don't respond, browser add-ons don't work. All of which is subsequently cured by upgrading/reinstalling.

Our lot are still running Mint 13 with no issues at all. I wonder what's going awry with yours? |

It's getting some great reviews. I hate to be all gushing but I really do feel Linux Mint has this thing sewn up, I really do. I don't think I've used such a pleasant OS at home.
Our lot are still running Mint 13 with no issues at all. I wonder what's going awry with yours? It's very elegant and seems to be attracting people who've fallen out of love with Ubuntu. If the Distrowatch chart is anything to go by, it's more popular than Ubuntu or Fedora. The next obstacle Linux will have to overcome is Microsoft's pernicious Secure Boot. Maybe it's the thought of free software beyond their control which upsets them. |

I am trying out the new Cinnamon in Ubuntu but the only thing putting me off is the size of the icons and text in the Desktop menus. Is anybody out there with the same problem and can it be changed easily in GUI without directly editing text files.

I'm using E17 with Bodhi Linux at the moment. It can be a bit strange at first, but like most DE's it's not long before you figure it out. The major selling point for me is the low system resources, meaning I can stick an Ubuntu based distro on our ancient-specced EeePC and it's still fast. It's amazing what it does with such minimal demands.
