My employer sells applications on servers which run Red Hat Enterprise and/or Centos. Client PC's for the app are mostly running Windows. The Linux itself is not the main selling feature. I personally am a Linux user, but I use Ubuntu or Mint myself.

Definitely a bad idea

Looking for a VM package for Ubuntu which will let me run Windows 98 with Unreal (the game) under Linux. There are lots of VM options, however I'm not sure which will support Direct3D. I think I may end up having to look at VMware or Virtualbox. Was wondering if anyone has tried these?

Both run well under Linux
My preference is VMware, only because I use and support it for work.
Not sure about direct3d, but a quick ask in either of the product forums would be best place to answer or just install and try.

Did anyone see the announcement? Ubuntu for tablets on the way shortly. Looks really lovely, but would I replace Android with it on my Nexus 7? No, no way. But I would be interested in buying a device with it already installed. Very much so.

Keep wondering how they are managing to keep the quality and stability running fine.
After all some distros have trouble just manging the deskop version.
Yet Canonical have server\desktop\mobile phone\tv\tablet can they manage to maintain standards?

No support for my ageing but still great HD3970 anymore, maybe a move to NVidia with my next upgrade.

Some might argue that they don't. Including the missus, who's having a lot of freezes with 12.04 on her laptop.

For my part though I love Ubuntu. Nobody has done more to make Linux work for us norms.

I really like Cinnamon. Can't stand gnome 3 so this will be a good move by Fedora.

I like Cinnamon a great deal, but I can't see Fedora switching away from Gnome. It's a pipe dream right now.

Two suggestions that worked for me on 10.10:

(1) Avoid Google Chrome or revert to a much older version. I use Chromium as the next best thing. I think it is due to interactions with the graphics driver.

(2) Try disabling the CPU frequency scaling (/etc/init.d/ondemand) and see if that helps. Obviously not a great fix for a laptop but it might give a clue as to the reason.

That said, my 12.04 is doing fine with no need for such tricks, but under Virtualbox on a Win7 laptop ...

Dunno if you have all seen, but Ubuntu intends to roll its own display manager. Like, this is just what the Linux eco-system needs. More fragmentation. I would absolutely love to hear what Valve thinks of this.


Hi dude, thanks for this. She doesn't use Chrome at all (we're all staunch Firefox fans here), and I may try your other suggestion. To be honest I'm getting rather fed up with Ubuntu and Linux, and am seriously considering moving back to Windows permanently. More later...

You may be aware that openSUSE 12.3 was released last week. I installed it over the weekend on the laptop for missus_El, and it's so far proving a real trooper. Very nice new look featuring KDE4.10, and rock solid. It's a keeper! I'll tell you what has amazed me; the openSUSE Build Service. Blimey there's a ton of stuff going on there. Well worth a look.

Till Ubuntu release something.

Well, having read about the many good bug fixes in KDE 10.0.1, I enabled the backports repo on my Kubuntu 12.04 and it is all seriously great, working very stable & fastest KDE yet for me.

There are a number of transitions in Ubuntu currently. Mir is in a question above. Dropping Ubuntu Developer Summits is another, that's a shame as it was a big part of what made Ubuntu a community or peers but they would have been very expensive for Canonical to run (although KDE manages to run conferences on a fraction of the budget). Another is a proposal to drop 6-monthly releases and encourage use of the development release (or as others would say dropping 'interim' releases and having a 'rolling-release'), this is still being discussed and Kubuntu developers have been very prominent in that discussion. Other changes that have happened in the last year include moving developers away from unprofitable projects like Kubuntu, Launchpad and Bazaar. Also the Ubuntu release manager was made redundant which was a shame as that was a role which helped flavours like Kubuntu a lot."
