Honestly, I don't think it's the graphics drivers per se. I'm using the same driver on other distros without issue. My suspicion is that it's more likely a Compiz related problem. I've had a lot of trouble with Ubuntu since the switch to Unity, and that has to be because it's a Compiz plugin. I've seen the problem with both ATI and Nvidia drivers in use, and sometimes when neither are in use.

Gave up
After spending far too long this weekend trying to get Mint 14 To run Cinnamon 1.8 or upgrade it to Mint 15 and run 1.8, im going to wait until Mint 15 is officialy released in a few weeks

Back on my old faithfull Xfce drive

Why does Mint not give you the option to go straight to a install, instead of having to boot into full live dvd session

Also why does it not download and install latest updates when its installing, really time consuming having to load OS then install loads of updates, you also have to watch it as its asks if you want to replace old commands with new

YES thats why im updating

Great once its installed and running, but you need to catch and use new releases as soon as they are released, or use the unsable Debian rolling release. But even that needs loads of updates.

The reason for the live session is to check that everything works before you do anything drastic.
Adding updates during the installation mught be asking for trouble and the updates, which don't really take that long, are invariably faster than Windows.

Well my Xfce does a full/new/codecs/updates install 11min quicker than Mint, i know i timed it
(yes, both still loads quicker than Windows)

But im going to install a new OS thats drastic in itself
Also you cant do a unatended install with MInt, it keeps asking for confirmation. you even have to update the update manager before you can do the updates

They just need to keep the ISo more upto date, that would help.

Sorry, just a bit grumpy, lack of sleep. Do think Mints great, but just a few minor niggles that could be easily sorted would help.

Thing is, Mint is run by a small band of freedom fighters operating on the fringes of the Empire. Considering their limited resources, in fact comparing them to other distros with more resources, I think they don't get much wrong. They have to freeze the Ubuntu release they base on as it's released and not later, so I understand why there's always a crapload of updates at Mint's launch.

Just have a nice sleep dude. You'll feel differently later.

If youve got a hour + spare and youre bored, or skiving at work

Warning the video and sound quality totaly suck.
But i thought it was worth putting up with.

the second is more of a laugh.
At least i thought so, but that may be me just being tired

They advise watching in that order, only so you get some of the Fedora and Arch jokes

No time for sleep, got Distros to play with
Joking aside, i think the Mint 15 release in a few weeks will be awsome combined with Cinamon 1.8

Yore right about Clem and team.
I remember using Mint a few yrs ago, and waiting for a new release at xmas.
it was delayed But only because Clem was moving house at same time, it was xmas, he didnt have broadband
But the Mint team still managed to get a perfect release of mint out after xmas Awsome

Compare that to Ubuntu resources!

I'm seriously addicted to Mint 14 a minute, it's robust, fast and when I use it I don't feel that I need to use my Windows 7 machine for anything. Really looking forward to Mint 15, I'll update on it's official release and I'm expecting good things from it.

*Fascinating facts ahead!*

I've just been playing around with the new Gnome 3 again. Only live, but by God it's lovely. I can't help myself, but I coo over it when I use it. I can understand how programmers and developers might not like it (possibly), but for me I absolutely love the design. So easy going and crisp. Oh Linux fans why do you hate it so? Please don't hate it. It's an amazing design that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

That is all. I read you every day.

Which Distro are you using it on?
http://www.gnome.org/getting-gnome/

Does look good, better than Unity
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ete5Us0-IpY

Bit hard to describe, maybe easier if i just burn a dvd and try it.
Do the 'multiple desktops' work indepedent of each other?
Thats what puts me off Unity, if you open several Firefox at same time, Firefox wont work independently.
Thats to me and i know what im on about, maybe just burn a dvd and try it

Fedora I think. Just Google for "Gnome 3.8 live cd".

If I'm understanding you right, then yes the workspaces are independent. I'm pretty sure you can have multiple instances of Firefox across all of them and they operate independently. I've powered it down now, otherwise I would have tried it for you.

It's just such a gorgeous design. The shitstorm is so unwarranted. It is better than Unity, but I quite like that too. I'm fickle like that.

Looks like the final release stable versions of Linux Mint 15 are being worked on by the main man Clem right now http://community.linuxmint.com/iso
When it shows as approved for release (probably in the next 2 days) then head over to http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/linuxmint.com/stable/
to download whichever of the different versions you want.

Loaded it onto spare drive to test.
Yes they are independent, but not as much as Xfce. You need to do a few extra mouse clicks to achive the same result as Xfce.

Just cant take to Gnome/Unity, tried Kde thats defo a no no

Spent 45 minutes this afternoon de-Hackintoshing my Thinkpad X61 in favour of Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon.

That's 45 minutes to install, update, install additional software, configure everything how i wanted, and put my files back on (and some of that time was spent with Chrome's new voice search searching for cat photos ).

Contrast that with the 12 hours i spent on Wednesday/Thursday factory resetting a relative's Vista laptop, patching, reinstalling apps and putting back their files after they were infected with the Metropolitan/UKash virus. I *really* wish they'd let me put Linux on there. Next time they get infected i'm going to push hard for it (or strongly suggest a Chromebook).

Cinnamon just keeps getting better and better, and Mint 15 has got to be the most polished release yet.

What's up with KDE? Don't be dissin' no KDE! Still the very best Linux DE there is imho. In fact its more than just a DE; it's a whole eco-system.

However, Cinnamon is indeed tremendous. Really looking forward to trying out the new release. Clem and the team never cease to amaze, and I love their communication with their users. It really and truly feels like a proper community distro, with users providing feedback and funding, and the developers listening and responding. Nobody else does it this way. I'll definitely be donating again with this release.

Nothing 'wrong' with KDE, i like choice and being able to customise, just KDE has too much of it!

Gnome/Unity, Multiple Desktops dont work as smoothly as Xfce.

Mate, trying to be something it isnt, seems to have been developed just to keep Gnome 2 fans happy.

Cinnamon, Cant realy fault it, except id like to be able to change a few things on Menu, but cant.
Also, seems no matter of changing themes etc, you can always tell its Mint
PS whats with the horrible default Firefox icon

Xfce, just gets the job done, VERY easy to customize

Downloading now, will have a play with it, until Xfce release in about a month, going of previous releases.
It may convert me in that time
