Manjaro is a great up and coming distro, but not quite as user frindly as the Ubuntu based ones, but pretty close and defo one to keep a eye on.
They even include cinnamon

But as its arch its worth giving it a go to see if youre HDMI works.

It didn't work and silly me forgot to select install alonside windows i clicked replace windows lol. Spent all night re-installing everything.
I've burnt both linux mint and Manjaro onto discs as i'm very interested in where both of these go from here.
Also i noticed just that AMD do have linux drivers so i might play around with them tomorrow and see if that helps.

Check your driver manager in Linux Mint and let us know which driver you have installed. You should be able to get the Catalyst driver no problem there. Once installed, just perform a reboot and let us know if it's worked. Our laptop uses the AMD Catalyst driver (bit trickier to install on the openSUSE install - Mint is a lot easier this way) and the performance has been excellent. Give it a try.

Say a lot about with the opinion that Gnome is only really for those developing Gnome itself, not for actual users.

Judging by the comments I think that's about a year old, but I suppose it's still relevant.

I think though, that I can see the point of a team developing an OS their way and not having to fret that users will tweak or mess it up. Gnome 3 is pretty stunning out of the box, as is Unity. I've tried a lot of themes on Gnome 3 and to be frank none of them are much cop, even those touted on fansites as worthy of attention. I think they always look worse than the default and end up reverting back.

Cinnamon is very different though, and is exactly designed for the end user to have complete control over, as is KDE. I find a great variety of themes that look fantastic on both, and add to the experience rather than detract. I myself prefer Cinnamon at the mo, but all these different types of approaches have their merits and problems. Take your pick.

Tiling sounds weird but I'm now totally sold on the idea. It just works and it's very configurable.

Sounds like you're missing the driver. Your device is compatible, but Mint has made a boo-boo somewhere. I would go into Synaptic and have a search for a package called fglrx and install it that way. The driver manager really ought to have picked it up though.

Windows driver via WINE! Lol I've never heard that before!

I've got a work around coming a 10m vga cable and a 7m pc speaker port extension lead for £10 on ebay , i'll just run both alongside my 10m hdmi cable and put the pc speakers by tv and that way i'll get soubnd on linux and a proper screen lol. It's worth the £10 so i hardly have to use Windows.

OK, but it still sounds to me that you don't have a working driver installed. Found this over on the Linux Mint website:


Have you tried this? I mentioned the kernel upgrade first as a few comments said these steps were unnecessary and the kernel update would fix it. As that did not work for you, you could try this.

Another option would be to do a google search for "mint hdmi audio" and the first few items offer some different solutions, which may/may not work in your situation.

For me, the following worked on an ati radeon card:

HDMI Audio is disabled by default on kernel 3.0+ due to a black screen on some monitors.


To get audio working again go to:

etc/default/grub
Open grub as administrator with a text editor.

Then change the line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1"

Type on the terminal:

sudo update-grub

Reboot and your HDMI sound will work again.

I've given up lol i gone back to mint13 and wollah sound via HDMI and proper screen resolution.
I'll order those leads from Ebay but before i re-install mint15 i'll wait until the new Kernel is up and give it another go then.

I have no idea tbh i think it was 3.9something. ATM linux mint 13 is working a treat so it might be worth me sticking with that until the new kernel is widely available. Funny enough this months linux user magazine had linux mint 15 on it's dvd disc lol.

Just bought Left 4 Dead 2 for Linux off Steam. Only £3.74! What's the solo player like? I'm not very good at FPS games but I do enjoy playing them. Sorta hoping there's still fun to be had for a n00b like me.

I've just bought a 1Tb Western Digital Blue to replace my old 320Gb HDD. I currently have 3 partitions on it; one for Windows 7, one for backup stuff, and one with Linux Mint on it.

Now I want to create 4 bigger partitions on the new drive, the extra partition being used for a spare Linux to play with. I was going to use Clonezilla to clone all my current partitions, and just drop them back on the larger drive in pretty much the same order but with larger space (obv.) and the extra partition at the end. Is this possible, or am I approaching it too simplistically? Will I need to edit my fstab to allow for these changes, and am I going to have a bit of a fight with it? I have a swap partition at /dev/sda7 at the moment which is likely to be a different number when I'm done.

Looks like it's gonna be a brute force fresh install across the board. None of my images are checking properly. All say they're corrupted.

Never mind. It's not so much the Linux installs, but the bloody Windows 7 one. There's been a metric crap-ton of updates since 2009! Grrr!

Having lots of fun with my backups. Found my external drives that had been packed away before the builders came in, so I decided to check my backups. Was fine in Linux Mint, but on plugging into W7 the whole system froze. Long story short it had to do a file recovery check and so many were lost. Because of how it does it though, there's no way of knowing exactly which files have been damaged. Windows creates a "found" folder on the disk after the operation but it revealed little.

Luckily I had another backup of the files elsewhere I could put back on the external backup (backup of backup!), but its taken an evening to double check everything is there.

So far I still haven't been able to just plug in the new drive and get it going! Hoping to do it soon now after all this.

New build super PC next week. Still waiting for the rest of the hardware to turn up - done my homework and gone for the 3 s's - speed, silence and stability - what could possibly go wrong.

Lots of fun this last week...

Managed to finally set up my new hard drive and restore all my stuff. Or at least, I think I've restored it all. If I'm missing anything now, I'll pretend it's not important and move on.

So with the drive set up and nicely partitioned, I decided to partake of a a little more distro hopping. Of course! Love Mint to bits, but thought this was a nice opportunity to really give Ubuntu 13.04 a proper go. I've now got two large partitions for Linux distros, plus one large Windows 7 one. So I installed openSUSE 12.3 KDE on one patition and Ubuntu 13.04 as the main Linux, letting it control GRUB.

Have only had a day with it so far, but well and truly my socks are blown off. Not only is it really easy to use and extremely gorgeous, but it's a flipping great massive heeeerrrrrruuuugge load less demanding on resources. It's almost a light DE! OK, maybe not, but measuring general usage up against Cinnamon and KDE reveals Ubuntu's Unity to have similarly impressive performance. Compiz really seems to have been tamed, and I suspect that comes from it being focused on Ubuntu mostly these days.

I'm keeping an eye on it, but how nice to be back on Ubuntu. I had so much trouble with 11.04 right through to 12.10, that I thought it was the end for the distro, but here it is looking so polished and fast.

Still waiting on Amazon for the PSU, CPU and SSD. I opened the Asus GeForce GTX660 TI-DC2-2GD5 Nvidia Graphics Card (2GB, GDDR5) etc etc package today and let me tell you that is one seriously impressive set of boxes. The card looks pretty capable as well.
I'm currently planning another dual boot installing Win 7 on the SSD and Ubuntu on the HDD. Fingers crossed.
